Broc Rutter will extend his career into the professional ranks in 2020 after signing a free-agent contract with the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers.
Rutter, winner of the Gagliardi Trophy as the most outstanding player at the NCAA Division III level last December, went unselected in the NFL Draft held over the weekend, but signed with the defending NFC Champions shortly after the draft's conclusion on Saturday.
Establishing new North Central single-season records for passing yards (4,591), passing touchdowns (56), completions (309), attempts (435) and passing efficiency (199.9), Rutter earned National Offensive Player of the Year honors from D3football.com and Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year accolades from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) as the Cardinals won their first Division III national title with a 41-14 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in Shenandoah, Texas.
The victory concluded a collegiate career which saw Rutter establish a new Division III national record for career passing yards (14,265) as well as new CCIW career records for yards (9,772), touchdowns (107) and completions (708) in conference play. Rutter owns nearly every passing records on the books for the Cardinals' program, including career records for touchdown passes (145), completions (1,016), attempts (1,503), completion percentage (67.6) and passing efficiency (176.4).
A participant among outstanding senior players from all divisions of college football at the Hula Bowl in Honolulu in January, Rutter received a total of five All-America selections the past two seasons and was a First Team All-CCIW honoree for four straight years, including three Offensive Player of the Year honors.
