NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 23, 2021) - In their first competition of the winter sports season, the North Central College women's wrestling team fell to Tiffin University (Ohio) 31-17 on Saturday afternoon in Residence Hall/Recreation Center.
To begin the dual, Shanna Morris of Tiffin, who came in at No. 8 individually in the preseason, beat
Kate Cacho via tech fall. In the 109-pound weight class, Brooke Richards (Tiffin) pinned
Angelina Graff took a 9-0 lead. Following a Cardinal forfeit at 116,
Mateah Roehl lost via tech fall at the 123-pound division.
Asia Nguyen-Smith entered the win column to begin her season as she pinned her Dragon opponent in 2:18 to give the Cardinals five points. Senior
Amanda Martinez didn't miss a beat from last year as she won via fall (2:47)Â at 136-pounds.
Tiffin took the next three matches before No. 1Â
Yelena Makoyed pinned No. 4 Jessie Lee in the 191-pound contest, but it wasn't enough as Tiffin won the match 31-17.
In exhibition matches, Roehl, Nguyen-Smith, and
Kim Nunez all earned victories in their respective weight classes.
