Bloomington, Ill. (Oct. 13, 2021) - After a week since their last contest, the North Central College men's soccer returned to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play with a 1-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan University.
The last time the Cardinals and Titans met, the Titans ended the Cardinals season in the CCIW semifinal game in penalty kicks. The Cardinals were looking to get their revenge tonight as they traveled to Bloomington Illinois to take on the Titans.
The first half was a defensive battle as the Cardinals and the Titans did not have many opportunities. North Central shot three times with Titans goalkeeper making one save, the Titans shot four times and Cardinal goalkeeper Sid Marquardt earned three saves.
In the second half, the Cardinals were looking to find the back of the net and gain some momentum. In the 54th minute, Brandon Harmsen found the back of the net off a Sam Abreu cross to put the Cardinals up 1-0.
The Cardinal defense has earned their 12th shutout of the season while only allowing four goals all year. Marquardt tallied five saves and improved his record to 11-0-1 on the season. Titans goalkeeper Ethan Fineman tallied three saves as he fell to 1-1-1 on the season.
The Cardinals (14-0-1, 4-0-1 CCIW) are back in action Saturday night as they travel to Chicago to take on the Vikings of North Park University in a CCIW matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 pm inside Holmgren Athletic Complex.
