NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Oct. 13, 2021) - Looking to end a three-match skid, the North Central College women's volleyball team came out firing on all cylinders in the first two sets before dropping the final three to fall to conference foe Carthage College, 2-3.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-1 advantage to begin the opening set. Following a Firebirds run, a kill from Isabelle Guerrero sparked a 7-1 run for North Central. With a 13-7 lead, each team rallied to bring the score to 23-19. A kill from Kendra Battle and Guererro's fifth kill of the contest secured the set one win for North Central, 25-23.

After back-and-forth action, Abbi Barickman tied the second set at 8-8, with an assist from Anna Gawron. With the score at 10-11, the Cardinals scored the next six points to take a 16-11 lead. The Firebirds' attempted comeback fell short thanks to Barickman's ninth kill of the set which put North Central ahead 2-0, and won the second set 25-22.

Looking to bounce back, Carthage stormed out to a 6-2 lead in the third set. Three straight Firebird errors brought the Cardinals within one, 6-5 before Carthage began a 12-3 run as they would take set three, 25-12. Continuing their momentum into the fourth set, the Firebirds found themselves up 12-5. Down 17-8, North Central fought back winning three of the next four points but it wasn't enough as the Firebirds led from start to finish in set four to win 25-16.

Competing in their first fifth-set of the season, a kill from Amber Vande Hei put the Cardinals on top 5-4. Following three straight North Central points, Carthage responded with two of their own to knot the contest at 10. In a set that saw eight ties and six lead changes, the Firebirds won five of the final six points to win the set 15-11, and the match, 3-2.

Barickman posted a season-high 18 kills on the evening with Battle sitting at 13. Maddi Barickman sent out 24 assists while Anna Gawron recorded 12. Emily Stallmann posted 17 digs in the five sets. Vande Hei tallied seven block assists in the match, her career-best.

Haley Horner tallied 23 kills on the night with Jenna Millen dishing out 31 assists over the five sets played.
