HANOVER PARK, Ill (Oct. 23, 2021) - Competing in their second straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship match, the North Central College women's tennis team lived up to their No. 1 seed as the Cardinals took down Wheaton College 5-0 on Saturday afternoon to earn the CCIW Championship.

Natalie Bassett and Kaeli Smashey earned the first win for North Central at No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 victory against Bethany Hoogerheide and Lydia Adams of Wheaton. Giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead, Sydney Sawyer and Nina Patience secured a win at No. 3 doubles. Finding themselves down early in their match, the duo of Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay clawed back to an 8-7 win to finish the doubles sweep of the Thunder.

Needing just two wins in singles play to win the CCIW Championship, Kanthaphixay rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles before Sawyer clinched the title with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Adams in the No. 6 singles spot. Smashey and Mikayla Edquiban each won the first sets in their respective matches.

North Central concludes the fall season with a perfect 14-0 record, adding to their program record for wins in the fall. This marks the second CCIW championship in women's tennis history, both coming in the previous two seasons.

The Cardinals are idle until their spring season begins on March 5th as they travel to Missouri to face No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis.
