Cardinals Eighth in Rock Island, Fifth in Louisville

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. / LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 1-2, 2021) – The sixth ranked North Central College men's cross country team saw an array of ranked opponents this weekend with one squad competing in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational in Rock Island, Ill. and another traveling south to Louisville, Ky. for the Live in Lou Classic. The Cardinals finished 8th out of 24 teams in Rock Island, and 5th out of 42 teams in Louisville.

North Central faced their first big challenges of the season as their young team navigated through two meets that saw a combined, 10 nationally-ranked institutions. 

Down in Rock Island, Kyle Bell led the Cardinals through the 8-kilometer Saluki Golf Course, finishing in 28th out of 340 competitors with a time of 26 minutes and 8.4 seconds. Ishaan Patel was the next Cardinal through the line in 52nd, with a time of 26 minutes, 41.1 seconds. Nathan Halbrader (27:00.7) and Austin Emrath (27:08.9) were able to stick together finishing in 69th and 70th, respectively. Rounding out the Cardinals top-7 were Cameron Benes (27:20.5) in 90th, Juan Castro (27:34.7) in 100th and Josh Johnson (27:35.5) in 101st.

The 13th ranked University of Chicago won the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational with 38 points, followed by No. 21 ranked Loras College with 78 points. Central College finished in third with 106 points, while North Central's 269 points placed them eighth.

Louisville, Ky., the host city for this year's National Championship, drew in eight nationally ranked teams among the 42-team field at the Live in Lou Classic. Matt Boelke led the charge Saturday, finishing 12th overall out of 340 competitors, in a time of 24 minutes and 45.2 seconds, followed by Julian Higueros in 16th with a time of 24 minutes 54.2 seconds. Gabe Pommier (25:02.9) finished in 23rd, while Connor Riss (25:44.2) finished 58th. Rounding out the top-7 was Max Svienty (25:49.8) in 60th, Colin Kachlic (26:00.7) in 72nd, and James McGlashon (26:15.9) in 86th.

Fifth-ranked MIT won the Live in Lou Classic with 46 points, while ninth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished in a distant second with 135 points. No. 16 ranked Emory finished in a close third with 137 points, followed by No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finishing in fourth with 165 points and North Central in fifth with 167 points. 

The Cardinals will head back to Rock Island on Oct.16 for the Augustana College Invitational.
