ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Nov 14, 2021) – Under gray skies and dropping temperatures, the North Central College men's cross country team battled to a third-place team finish out of 30 teams with four of its student-athletes finishing in the top 30.
Gabe Pommier was the Cardinals' top finisher through the eight-kilometer course in fifth place clocking a time of 24 minutes and 36 seconds. Next through the line was Matt Boelke with a time of 24 minutes and 42.1 seconds – his fastest this season – to secure ninth place.
Connor Riss (24:53.3) also clocked a season's best to finish 16th while
Kyle Bell (25:02.3) rounded out the Cardinal's top-30 performances in 27th.
Max Svienty (25:11.7) and Colin Kachlic (25:12.7) both turned in season's best performances to finish side-by-side in 33rd and 34th, respectively. Drew Guimond (25:28.3) rounded out the Cardinals' top-7 in 46th.
Wartburg College has led the regional and national rankings all year and unsurprisingly claimed the regional title with a 38 point total to secure its automatic bid to the 2021 National Championship. Behind Wartburg was Washington University with 86 points in second, only four points ahead of North Central's 90 point total. The University of Chicago finished fourth with 104 points followed by Loras College in fifth with 148 points.Â
North Central along with the remaining top-five finishing teams at the Midwest Regional Championship all received at-large bids to the NCAA Division III National Championship according to the NCAA's announcement on Sunday.
The Cardinals will reconvene this week before traveling to Louisville, Ky. for the National Championship on Nov. 20. The men's race is set for 10 a.m. (CT).
