Marshall, Mo. (Nov. 20, 2021) - The North Central College women's wrestling team took third place at the Missouri Valley College Open which contained four top-ten ranked NCAA teams and ten top-ten ranked NAIA schools.
Yelena Makoyed earned first place individually for her respective weight class.Â
The Cardinals tallied 178.5 points at the meet as they had 33 wrestlers take the mat. King University took first-place (244 points) as they had three individual champions while McKendree University finished in second-place with 210.5 points.Â
In the 170-pound weight class, Makoyed won her first match of the day via a 5-5 decision in the second round, as she received a bye in round one. In her next match, Makoyed would win by tech fall (12-2) over Elisa Robinson (Baker University) to move on to the quarterfinals. Makoyed would win by tech fall (10-0) in the next round followed by a tech fall (12-2) in the semifinals to move her into the championship match. Makoyed would win the championship match with a tech fall (10-0) over Joye Levendusky (McKendree University) to earn 27 points for North Central.Â
Sydney Petzinger (109) started the tournament by rolling past Tehani Soares of Indiana Tech by tech fall 14-4 in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round. Petzinger suffered her first loss of the tournament to Ovieonce Ray of Wayland Baptist University by tech fall 10-0. Her day ended in fifth place match, losing by decision to Natalie Reyna of McKendree University to earn sixth place and 15 points for North Central.Â
In the 116-pound weight class,
Kendra Ryan defeated her Campbellsville University opponent by tech fall 12-0 to move onto the second round. Following a loss in the second round, Ryan pinned two of her opponents and won by tech fall (15-5) in the consolation semifinals to put her in the third place match. Ryan would end the day losing her final match to Camille Fournier of Texas Wesleyan to earn 4th place honors. Mateh Roehl would place sixth in the same weight class, falling to the individual champion Camille Fournier in the consolation semifinals. Â
After losing in the first round to Vayle-rae Baker of King University,
Amani Jones would bounce back and win the rest of her matches to earn third place honors in the 123-pound division.
Yele Aycock would take 7th in the 130-pound weight class and
Kim Nunez would also take 7th in the 143-pound weight class.Â
In the 136-pound weight class,
Sara Sulejmani defeated her opponent by a 6-3 decision to move onto the third round after receiving a first round bye. She would defeat her next opponent by a 6-4 decision but would fall in the quarterfinals match to Emily Se of Southern Oregon University. Sulejmani would fall in the third place match to take home fourth place and 17.5 points for the Cardinals.Â
Traeh Haynes started her day by pinning her opponent Jesse Kirby from the University of the Cumberlands to move onto the second round. After falling in the second round match, Haynes would win her next four with three pins and one tech fall. After losing in the consolation semifinals, Haynes would defeat Emily Sandoval of Menlo College by a 9-0 decision taking home fifth place.Â
The Cardinals compete on Nov. 24 as they host the Augustana College Vikings inside Gregory Arena which begins at 6:00 p.m.
