Roehl and Sulejmani lead the way at the Pointer Open

Stevens Point, Wis. (Nov. 7, 2021) - Traveling up north to Stevens Point, Wis to kick off the 2021-22 season, the North Central women's wrestling team had 21 total place winners, two of them taking first-place and five women taking second-place at the Pointer Open. 

Sophomore Kate Cacho took home second place in the 101-pound division. Cacho won by decision in the quarterfinals (8-0), won by tech fall in the semifinals (10-0) before falling to Brooke Thurber of UW-Stevens Point in the Championship. Sarah Frost and Amber Turner finished in third and fourth in the 101-pound division. 

Sophomore Mateah Roehl took home first-place in the 116-pound division. Roehl won by a tech fall in the quarterfinals (12-1) and a tech fall in the semifinals (11-1). Roehl and teammate Kendra Ryan met in the championship match, where Roehl would win by decision (8-5). 

In her first meet as a Cardinal, Amani Jones finished in second place in the 123-pound weight class. Jones earned her first pin of her career in her first match, she won by tech fall in the quarterfinals (10-0), earned another pin in the semifinals before falling in the championship match. 

Sophomore Niya Teresita Gaines took home second-place in the 130-pound weight class at the Pointer Open. She won by tech fall in her first match (10-0), earned her first pin of the season in the quarterfinals, won by tech fall in the semifinals (12-2) before falling in the championship match. Freshman Riley Aamold finished second in the 143-pound division, she pinned her opponents in her first two matches before falling in the championship match. 

Freshman Sara Sulejmani kicked off her career by taking home first place in the 136-pound division. Sulejmani pinned two of her opponents and won by tech fall (10-0) before winning by decision in the championship match (5-2). 

The women's wrestling program is back in action on Nov. 19-20 as they travel to Marshall, Mo. to compete in the Missouri Valley College Open. The matches are set to begin at 9:00 am inside the Burns Athletic Center.
