Dec. 10, 2021 - In the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) regular season rankings, the North Central College men's wrestling team was ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history while also having five individual wrestlers ranked in their respective weight class.
This is the second regular season rankings this season from the NWCA and the Cardinals are coming in at the No. 1 spot after previously being ranked ninth. Stevens Institute dropped from third to tenth this week, followed by the United States Coast Guard Academy in ninth, Coe College in eighth, Augsburg University in seventh and John Carroll University in sixth. The top five teams in the rankings are Wabash College in fifth with 33.5 points, Loras College in fourth with 41.5 points, UW-Lacrosse and Wartburg College are tied for second with 42 points and the Cardinals jumping eight spots, claiming the top spot with 44.5 points.
Robert Precin claimed the top spot in the 133-pound weight class in the latest rankings. Precin is a perfect 13-0 this season with ten wins by decision, one win by major decision and two wins by pin. Javen Estrada was ranked fourth in the 141-pound weight class, posting a 10-2 record this season with eight of his wins by pin.
Alex Villar was ranked fourth in the 149-pound weight class. Villar has posted a 14-1 record this season with four pins, five wins by decision and two major decisions and three technical falls. In the 157-pound weight class, Cole Cervantes was ranked 11th. Cervantes has posted a 12-2 record this season with seven decision wins, one win by technical fall and four pins. Cody Baldridge was ranked third in the 197-pound weight class, he has posted a 6-4 record this season with three wins by decision, two major decision wins and one technical fall.
The No. 1 ranked Cardinals are back in action tomorrow as they host the 57th annual North Central College Invitational. The matches are set to start at 9:00 am inside the Residence Hall/Recreation Center.
