Dec. 11, 2021 - Competing in the 57th annual North Central College Invitational, the North Central College men's wrestling team finished in third while
Cody Baldridge and
Robert Precin finished in first in their respective weight classes.Â
In the 125-pound weight class, Julian Valtierrez defeated his opponent by a 20-4 technical fall after receiving a first round bye. Valtierrez would defeat his next opponent by a 14-4 major decision in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals. He would finish fourth after a 12-4 major decision loss to Derek Steele of Augsburg University.Â
After receiving a first round bye, Precin (133) would pin his opponent before winning by a 13-2 major decision in the quarterfinals. He would defeat Jaden Hinton of Baldwin Wallace by a 5-4 decision before taking down conference rival Ethan Harsted of Wheaton College by a 7-1 decision in the championship match. John Asiura would finish in eighth in the 133-pound weight class after a pin in the third round and a medical forfeit before falling to Julian Purney in the consolation semifinals.Â
Caleb Magruder would finish in third in the 141-pound weight class after winning his first two matches by a 16-1 technical fall and pinning his opponent in the quarterfinals before falling by a 4-2 decision to Cade Willis of Augsburg University in the semifinals. In the 149-pound weight class, Alex Villar would finish in fifth place after defeating his opponent by an 18-2 technical fall before falling to Michael Petrella in the quarterfinals. Villar would win his next three matches by a 6-2 decision, 16-9 decision and 15-0 technical fall. Josh Cherba would finish sixth in the same division, Cherba would win his first match by a 16-7 major decision before falling to Villar in the fifth place match.Â
In the 157-pound weight class, Cole Cervantes would receive a first round bye before pinning his opponent, Gabe Phillips of Manchester College. Cervantes would win by a 5-2 decision before falling to Stanley Bleich of Baldwin Wallace. Cervantes finished the day with a 13-8 decision win over teammate Jamaal Salary to take home third place. Salary started off the day with three pins before falling to Tyler Shilson of Augsburg and taking fourth place.Â
Joseph Jens would receive a first round bye in the 174-pound weight class. Jenas would defeat his next two opponents by a 4-3 decision and a 5-2 decision before falling in the semifinals. Jens would win by an 8-1 decision over Griffin Rathburn in the third place match.Â
Jack Hominac received a first round bye in the 184-pound weight class before defeating his next two opponents by a 7-0 decision and a 6-4 decision. Hominac would fall to Giovanni Jackson of Harper College before losing the 3rd place match by a 7-6 decision.Â
In the 197-pound weight class, Baldridge would receive a first round bye before winning by a 13-2Â major decision over Nicholas Cassad of Wabash College. Baldridge would defeat his next two opponents by a 8-1 decision and a 3-2 decision putting him in the championship match. Baldridge would defeat Doug Byrne of Baldwin Wallace by a 3-2 decision, taking home first place.Â
Robby Bates would finish in second place in the 285-pound weight class. Bates would receive a first round bye before pinning his opponent Jose Ramos in the second round. Bates would win his next two matches by a 3-1 decision and a 5-1 decision. He would fall to Tyler Kim of Augsburg University by a 8-0 major decision in the championship match.Â
Baldwin Wallace would finish in first place with 166 points with Augsburg University finishing in second with 154 points. The Cardinals would take third with 136.5 points with Wisconsin-Whitewater in fourth and Wisconsin-La Crosse in fifth.Â
The No. 1 ranked Cardinals are back in action on Sunday Dec. 19 as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the Desert Duals hosted by Wartburg College.Â
