Dec. 11, 2021 - Competing in their third tournament of the season, the North Central College women's wrestling team had 16 total place winners, four of them taking second place while the team finished in second at the North Central College Open this afternoon.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Kate Cacho would lose her quarterfinal match by decision to Deja Heatley of King University. Cacho would defeat teammate Sarah Frost by a 4-2 decision in the second consolation round then would fall to Odelia Lopez in the semifinals putting her in the fifth place match. Cacho would defeat teammate Amber Turner by a 10-0 technical fall, finishing fifth while Turner finished in sixth.
In the 109-pound weight class, Sydney Petzinger would defeat her opponent by a 14-2 technical fall in the first round then pinning her opponent Valeriia Mamleeva of Lindenwood University to move onto the semifinals match. Petzinger would take down Natalie Reyna of McKendree University with a 7-4 decision win before falling to Emily Shilson in the championship match.
After receiving a first round bye, Kendra Ryan (116) would defeat Abby Nelson of Wisconsin-Stevens Point by a 12-0 technical fall moving herself into the semifinals match. Ryan would pin opponent Samara Chavez of King University to move onto the championship match where she would lose to Sage Mortimer of King University. Mateah Roehl would finish in fifth place in the 116-pound weight class, she would defeat her opponent by a 11-0 technical fall in the first round before falling to Aliyah Rollins in the quarterfinals. Roehl would defeat her next two opponents by a 10-0 and a 13-1 technical fall before losing to Samara Chavez in the semifinals. Roehl would finish the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Nelson.
In the 123-pound weight class, Asia Nguyen-Smith would finish in second place after pinning her first opponent, beating her second opponent by a 10-0 technical fall and a 13-12 decision over Vayle-rae Baker in the semifinals. Amani Jones took home third place in the 123-pound weight class. Jones defeated her first opponent by a 4-2 decision before falling to Cayden Condit in the quarterfinals. Jones would win three straight matches before pinning Condit in the third place match.
Niya Teresita Gaines took home third place in the 130-pound weight class by pinning her first two opponents before falling to Montana Delawder of King University. Teresita Gaines would defeat teammates Yele Aycock and Flora Vizi by a 10-4 and 9-2 decision. Vizi would take home fourth and Aycock would finish in fifth in the 130-pound weight class.
Sara Sulejmani finished in third place in the 136-pound weight class. After receiving a bye in the first round, Sulejmani would defeat her opponent by a 11-0 technical fall and pinning her next opponent in the quarterfinals. She would fall to Skye Realin in the semifinals before winning her next two matches by a no contest.
Kim Nunez would take home fifth place in the 143-pound weight class after defeating teammate Riley Aamold in the fifth place match. Nunez would win her three matches by a 7-1 decision, a pin in the second round and a 11-1 technical fall. Aamold would defeat Megan Struble by a 10-0 technical fall before falling to Nunez, finishing in sixth place.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Tiera Jimerson would pin her first opponent moving her into the semifinals where she would win by an injury default before losing by an 8-2 decision in the championship match. Fiona McConnell would finish in fifth place in the 170-pound weight class. McConnell would defeat her opponent by a 10-0 technical fall before losing in the quarterfinals. She would win her next two matches by a 5-0 decision and a pin over Destynie Pacheco. McConnell would end the day with a pin over McKenzie Cook.
In the 191-pound weight class, Traeh Haynes started off the day by pinning her first two opponents before falling in the semifinals. Haynes would win her next two matches by pins, earning herself third place.
King University finished in first place with 153 points, the Cardinals in second with 124.5 points, McKendree University in third with 91 points, followed by Augsburg University in fourth and Lindenwood University in fifth.
The No. 3 ranked Cardinals are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 19 as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the Desert Duals hosted by Wartburg College.
