Las Vegas, Nev (Dec. 19, 2021) - Taking a trip west to Las Vegas, Nev, the North Central College women's wrestling team went a perfect 6-0 yesterday after taking down Dixie State University, Ottawa University (Ariz.) and No. 11 Tiffin University inside the Flamingo Ballrooms.
The Cardinals dominated in their first dual meet against Dixie State as Kate Cacho started the day with a 10-0 technical fall over Carly Neville giving the Cardinals an early lead. Mateah Roehl would win by a 10-0 technical fall before Amani Jones would pin opponent Zoe Covington. Niya Teresita Gaines would defeat her opponent by a pin followed by Sara Sulejmani, Riley Aamold and Tiera Jimerson also earning pins giving the Cardinals a 48-0 win.Â
Taking on No. 11 Tiffin University, Cacho would fall in the first match of the dual putting the Cardinals down 5-0. Sydney Petzinger would defeat the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 101-pounds, Olivia Shore by a 11-0 technical fall to put the Cardinals within one. Jones and Teresita Gaines would defeat their opponents by a 15-4 and 10-0 technical fall giving the Cardinals the lead. Sulejmani would pin Michal Buska giving the Cardinals a 17-8 lead. Yelena Makoyed would pin her opponent Taryn Martin before Traeh Haynes would win by a 10-0 technical fall giving the Cardinals a 28-17 win.Â
Petzinger would get the action started against Ottawa University (Ariz.) winning by a 10-0 technical fall before Kendra Ryan defeated her opponent by an 11-0 technical fall giving the Cardinals an early 8-0 lead. Asia Nguyen-Smith would pin opponent Diaja Sams giving the Cardinals five more points. Yele Aycock won by a 10-0 technical fall in the 130-pound weight class extending the lead to 16. Kim Nunez would win her match by a 11-1 technical fall before Tiera Jimerson would pin opponent Cheyenne Williams. Amber Latta would finish the dual meet with a 11-0 technical fall win over Jessica Emerson to give the Cardinals a 44-1 win.Â
The Cardinals faced No. 11 Tiffin University again and Tiffin took the first match in the 101-pound weight class before Angelina Graff won by a forfeit in the 109-pound weight class giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead. The Cardinals would drop a match in the 116-pound weight class before Nguyen-Smith would defeat Stephanie Mondragon by a 11-0 technical fall. Aycock would get back in the action as she took down Sairra Tapp with a 10-0 technical fall. Aamold would pin Paige Lenhardt before Shelby Ottum would take down Sidney Ramos with a 12-2 technical fall. Fiona McConnell and Latta would both receive wins by forfeit giving the Cardinals a 38-9 win, making them 4-0 on the day.Â
Roehl would start off the second dual vs Ottawa University with a 10-0 technical fall win over Jasmin Soc-Lopez before Nguyen-Smith would defeat her opponent by a 10-0 technical fall. Flora Vizi would take down Katherine Cuellar with a 10-0 technical fall giving the Cardinals a 17-5 lead. Aamold would defeat Samantha Tuttle by a 10-0 technical fall before McConnell would win by a forfeit. Alondra Aguayo would finish the dual by pinning opponent Jessica Emerson, giving the Cardinals their fifth win of the day.Â
The Cardinals would end the day against Dixie State as Cacho would win the first match by a 10-0 technical fall. Graff would win the next match by a forfeit before Brooke Crawley would pin opponent Sadie Blake giving the Cardinals a 14-0 lead. Jones would pin opponent Zoe Covington in the 123-pound weight class before Vizi would pin Arianna Juarez. Raena Schledwitz would take the mat and defeat her opponent by a 10-0 technical fall in the 136-pound weight class before Nunez would pin her opponent keeping the Cardinals ahead. Ottum would pin opponent Desarae Matheny before McConnell and Aguayo both received wins by a forfeit giving the Cardinals a 48-0 win.Â
The Cardinals are back in action on Dec. 30 as they travel to Hoffman Estates, Ill. to compete in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, Hosted by Northwestern University. The matches are set to start at 11:00 am inside the NOW Arena.Â
