AURORA, Ill. (Feb. 26, 2021) – Continuing its stellar start to the season, the North Central College men's tennis team turned in a dominant 9-0 sweep over non-conference opponent Wabash College on Friday inside Eola Tennis Academy.
The Cardinals (3-0) wasted no time in taking a 3-0 lead after doubles play, as
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Andy Hinch made quick work of Liam Grennon and Reese Long by a 8-1 score at the No. 1 position.
Justin Howes and
Morgan Red teamed up to take down Reed Mathis and Trevor McKinney, 8-2 at No. 2, before
Javier Suarez Balsera and
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez rolled to a 8-1 victory over Cole Borden and Paul Hargitt at the No. 3 spot.
Carrying that momentum into singles play, Vilarroig Martinez swept Mathis in straight 6-0 sets at No. 3, while Suarez Balsera clinched the match victory shortly after with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Grennon at the No. 1 position.
Red added an impressive 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Hargitt at the No. 4 position, ahead of Gonzalez Fernandez who scratched out a hard fought 7-6 first-set win over Borden before a much easier 6-2 second-set victory.
Lucas Pindak followed at No. 6 with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win over McKinney, while
Daniel Urraca Mozos wrapped up the evening and completed the 9-0 sweep for North Central with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Long.
The Cardinals have a short lay-off, returning to the court on Saturday, Feb. 27 hosting Lake Forest College at 6:30 p.m. at Five Star Tennis is Plainfield, Illinois.
