Mar. 12, 2021 - After what appeared to be a promising start, the North Central College women's lacrosse team saw its fortunes quickly turn sour Saturday morning at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, as Transylvania University (Kentucky) soon pulled ahead and stayed clear of the Cardinals. The Pioneers wound up leaving town with a 16-6 victory in the first meeting between the two teams.

The Cardinals (1-2) held the visitors scoreless for the first seven minutes of play and owned a 2-0 lead after goals by Berit Vandenbroucke and Abbey Triebe. Transylvania regrouped and kept North Central out of the net for nearly 16 minutes thereafter, scoring four goals to pull in front with three coming on free-position attempts. The Pioneers were able to gain and advantage in time of possession by claiming 17 of the 23 draw controls in the contest and converting 6 of 8 free-position shots while the hosts went 2 for 10.

After carrying a 6-4 advantage into halftime, Transylvania (2-2) put the game out of reach by scoring eight unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period. The Pioneers' Courtney Pontius led all scorers with six goals (netting 3 of 3 free-position shots) while also contributing eight draw controls and four caused turnovers. Annabelle Steiner scored twice for the Cardinals, while Grace Steiner caused four turnovers and shared the team lead in ground balls (4) with Mary Pinkowski. Goalkeeper Abigail Widd saved 12 shots on goal.

North Central is idle until Saturday, Mar. 27, when it travels to face Concordia University Wisconsin. Play at Fitting Field in Mequon is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon. Click HERE for links to live coverage.
