LISLE, Ill. (Mar. 26th, 2021) - Earning their first win against Benedictine University since 2011, the North Central College softball team split a doubleheader against the Eagles at the Village Of Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex on Friday evening.

Emily Miller brought home Katie Del Re in the top of the first inning which began a Cardinal rally early in the contest. Elena Steveson followed that up with a single of her own as Jaime Smith crossed home plate. After a sacrifice fly from Talia Torosian which scored Miller, Elena Stevenson scored on an Eagle error as North Central jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.

Benedictine did their best to respond in the bottom half of the first, but Breanna Adams was able to limit the damage to only one Eagle run allowed in the inning.

Following another Eagles run in the second inning, the Cardinals used back-to-back Benedictine errors and a Smith bunt single to load the bases in the top of the fourth. Stevenson belted a single to center to score Del Re before Torosian hit her second sacrifice fly of the day to give North Central a 6-2 advantage.

The Eagles added two runs in the bottom half of the fourth before posting a five-run sixth inning to go ahead 9-6. North Central answered in the top of the seventh inning as Torosian doubled to left field and then scored on a Kylie Ryza single. With two outs, Adams doubled to bring home Ryza. Alexa Sherlund took advantage of an Eagles error allowing Adams to cross the plate to tie the contest at nine.

Heading to their second straight extra-inning game, neither team recorded a hit in the eighth inning. After a scoreless top half of the ninth from the Cardinals, Benedictine used a North Central error and a sacrifice fly to plate the winning run and take game one 10-9.

Following two scoreless frames to open game two, Del Re singled to center field as Ryza scored the first run of the contest. Benedictine scored a run in the third and fourth inning before the Cardinals opened the game in the fifth.

North Central tied the game as Danielle Lambert pinch ran for Torosian after she reached on an error. Sherlund hit her home to knot the game at two runs apiece. Taking advantage of two walks, Katie Del Re smashed a grand slam on the first pitch she saw to give the Cardinals a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Benedictine scored twice but it wouldn't be enough as Gianna Corban closed the door in the sixth and seventh innings to give head coach Venus Taylor her first win at the helm of Cardinals softball, 6-4.

The Cardinals compete in their first home games of the year as they host Elmhurst (6-4, 4-0 CCIW) tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 12 PM at Shanower Family Field. You can find full in-game coverage for those contests HERE.
