ELMHURST, Ill. (Apr. 15, 2021) – The North Central College women's tennis team was no match for College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) rival Elmhurst University on Thursday, cruising to a 9-0 shutout at Brune Tennis Courts.
Opening the day with doubles play, the Cardinals (8-4, 5-0 CCIW) allowed just one point to the Bluejays (1-5, 1-4 CCIW) as
Mikayla Edquiban and
Sydney Sawyer wasted no time in shutting out Bailey Ekstrand and Megan Engstrom, 8-0 at the No. 2 position to put North Central on the board.
At No. 3, reigning CCIW Player of the Week
Kaeli Smashey teamed up with
Nina Patience to take down June Bering and Alita Munoz, 8-1, before
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay rolled to a 8-0 shutout win over Julia Kostadinova and Isabella Rahman at the No. 1 spot.
Taking a commanding 3-0 lead into singles competition, three matches were won in straight 6-0 sets, led off by Patience over Munoz at No. 6 and Hougland over Bering at the No. 2 spot to quickly clinch the match victory for North Central.
Edquiban was next to finish at No. 4, defeating Ekstrand, 6-2, 6-0, before Sawyer completed the third shutout in singles play over Engstrom at No. 4. Atop the lineup, Smashey rolled Kostadinova, 6-0, 6-1, while Kanthaphixay closed out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Rahman at the No. 3 position.
Sitting atop the CCIW standings, the Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Apr. 11 with a tough match at 2019 CCIW runner-up Augustana College, with matches scheduled for 11 a.m. at Lower Campus Courts.
