ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Apr. 17, 2021) – Coming back from a 3-0 deficit after doubles play, the North Central College women's tennis team mounted an enormous 6-3 comeback victory over Augustana College on Saturday to snap a 10-match losing streak to the Vikings and remain unbeaten atop the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) standings.
Doubles play was as tightly contested as any match in recent memory, as all three matches went to a tiebreaker with the Vikings (5-5, 4-2 CCIW) coming out on top in all three matches 8-7.
Shaking off the tough losses in doubles play, the Cardinals (9-4, 6-0 CCIW) rebounded with a vengeance in singles play, storming back to sweep all six matches and steal away a 6-3 victory.
Nina Patience got the Cardinals on the board at the No. 6 position, downing Kalli Majewski, 6-0, 6-3.
Kaeli Smashey followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Annie Timm atop the lineup, before
Alaina Kanthaphixay evened the match score 3-3 with a 7-5, 7-5 defeat of Michaela Magee at the No. 3 position.
At No. 2,
Hannah Hougland gave the Cardinals its first lead of the day, scoring a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lily Schoeck at the No. 2 spot, ahead of
Mikayla Edquiban who clinched the match victory at the No. 4 position, fighting off Caitlyn Hanulikova, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
Just for good measure,
Sydney Sawyer completed the singles sweep with a come from behind 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 win at No. 5 over Lauren Oda.
With a brief break in the CCIW schedule, North Central returns to the court on Sunday, Apr. 18, playing host to Washington University in St. Louis at Benet Academy Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
