LISLE, Ill. (Apr. 2, 2021) – The North Central College men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) schedule with a 8-1 victory over Millikin University on Friday at Benet Academy Tennis Courts.
Opening the day with a clean sweep of doubles play, as
Morgan Red and
Justin Howes opened the scoring with a 8-2 win over Cory Erickson and James Broach at the No. 3 position.
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Andy Hinch followed with a 8-5 victory over Jacob Palley and Nick Laramee at No. 2, before
Javier Suarez Balsera and
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez teamed up for a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 2 over Clayton Maack and Holden Owens.
Red then opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Erickson at the No. 5 position, before Vilarroig Martinez clinched the match win for the Cardinals at No. 3 in straight 6-1 sets over Owens.
Continuing the scoring at No. 4, Hinch took care of Laramee, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, ahead of
Steven Mears who scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Broach at No. 6. At No. 1, Suarez Balsera capped the scoring for North Central with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Palley.
The Cardinals (6-2, 2-0 CCIW) are set for its final non-conference match on Saturday, Apr. 3, traveling to the University of Chicago with matches scheduled for 10 a.m. at Stagg Tennis Courts.
