Apr. 24, 2021 – Wrapping up the regular season inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, the North Central College women's lacrosse team fell short in its attempt of knocking off College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Champion Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, coming out on the wrong end of a 21-12 final.
The Cardinals (2-6, 1-4 CCIW) held tight with the Titans (10-2, 4-1 CCIW) over 50 of the 60 minute contest. Trailing 12-8 with just over 19 minutes to play in the second half, North Central charged back with a quick 3-1 run as
Jessica Deetjen tallied a goal with the Cardinals up a player.
Following an Illinois Wesleyan goal, Deetjen raced down the field and found the back of the net with North Central down a player to trim the Titan lead 13-10. Deetjen then made it three in a row with a free position goal on the following possession after scooping up the draw control and drawing a foul on her trip to the goal, suddenly shrinking the Illinois Wesleyan lead 13-11.
A well-timed Illinois Wesleyan timeout cooled the Cardinal momentum with just under 14 minutes to play in the contest however, as the Cardinals suddenly went cold on offense from that point forward, allowing the Titans to close the game on a 8-1 run.
The Cardinal draw control was much improved which led to more offensive possession this game, allowing just a -5 margin to the Titans, as North Central finished with 15, the second most in a game this season.
Deetjen led the team with six goals and nine draw controls on the afternoon, while
Berit Vandenbroucke tallied a pair of goals and an assist. Defensively,
Grace Steiner picked up seven ground balls and
Annabelle Steiner and
Mary Pinkowski each added three groundballs.
North Central's opponent in the upcoming CCIW Tournament opening round on Wednesday, Apr. 28 will be announced following the final regular season conference game on Sunday.
