ELMHURST, Ill. (Sept. 3, 2021) – A cool, evening race at Eldridge Park proved victorious for the North Central College men's cross country team as it saw seven of its student-athletes place in the top-10. The Cardinals turned in a low score of 18 points to place first at the Elmhurst University Earlybird Invitational on Friday.

The first runner to finish the 6-kilometer course was North Central's Gabe Pommier in a time of 19:06.6. Not far behind was Julian Higueros (19:15.5) in second and Carthage College's Craig Hundley (19:24.3) in third. 

A pack of Cardinals was next across the line, led by Matt Jett (19:27.7) in fourth-place, Colin Kachlic (19:28.9) in fifth-place, James McGlashon (19:29.0) in sixth-place, and Matt Boelke (19:31.0) in seventh-place. Max Svienty (19:57.8) rounded out North Central's top-7 to place 10th.

Despite the 155-person field, the Cardinals maintained two more packs in the front, placing a total of 18 Cardinals in the top-25. 

Finishing in second place behind North Central was the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) foe, Carthage College with 55 points. Illinois Tech placed third with 115 points, while another CCIW foe, Elmhurst University placed fourth with 118 points, and the University of Concordia (Wis.) placed fifth with 142 points. 

The Cardinals head to the Forester Invitational on Sept. 10 hosted by Lake Forest College.
