Louisville, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2022) - The North Central College men's wrestling team placed third at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals inside the Kentucky International Convention Center this weekend.
The Cardinals received a bye in the first round before facing off against No. 10 Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in the second round. JWU would win the first match of the dual putting them up 3-0. Bradley Rosen would get the action started for the Cardinals as he defeated Nicholas DeSola by a 16-11 decision. Robert Precin would defeat Hayden Brown 4-2 in the 141-pound weight class giving the Cardinals a 6-3 lead. In the 149-pound weight class, Alex Villar would defeat Gabriel McDaniel by a 6-3 decision putting the Cardinals up by six before Cole Cervantes would pin Steven Ocampo giving the Cardinals six more points. Payton Geigner would defeat Robert Garcia by a 8-0 major decision giving the Cardinals a 19-3 lead. JWU would take the next two matches before Cody Baldridge would defeat Tommy Wrzesien by a 20-5 technical fall in the 197-pound weight class. JWU would win the 285-pound weight but the Cardinals would win 22-15 moving them into the semifinals match.
The Cardinals would face the No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse Eagles. The Eagles would win the 125-pound match up giving them an early 3-0 lead. Precin would defeat Sawyer Sarbacker by a 5-3 decision to tie the score up. The Eagles earned a pin in the 141-pound weight class giving them a 9-3 lead before Villar would get a much needed major decision win over Jake Mandt to cut the Eagles lead to two. The Eagles would take the next two matches extending their lead to 15-7. Joseph Jens would get his first win of the weekend as he defeated Luke Clark by a 6-1 decision putting the Cardinals down by five. The Eagles extended the lead to 21-10 in the 184-pound weight class after Kayln Jahn pinned Mateen Taylor. Baldridge would win a 6-4 decision over Issac Lahr in the 197-pound weight class putting the Cardinals down 21-13 with one match remaining. The Eagles would finish the dual with a 3-0 decision win putting the Cardinals in the third place match against No. 18 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)
Julian Valtierrez started off the third place match with an 18-2 technical fall win over Robbie Horan before Precin defeated Josh Post 7-1 putting the Cardinals up 8-0. RIT would take the 141-pound weight class match cutting the lead to five. Villar would pick up another win on the day as he defeated Mike Glynn 12-5 in the 149-pound weight class putting the Cardinals up 11-3. RIT would earn four more points after a major decision victory before Geigner would defeat Austin Lamb 5-4 giving the Cardinals a 14-7 lead. Jens would defeat Zach Stedeford 11-5 earning the Cardinals three more points. RIT would take the 184-pound weight class as Nathan Parker defeated Taylor by a 7-6 decision. Baldridge would put the Cardinals up 18-10 after defeating Josh Harkless by a 10-2 major decision before Robby Bates would finish off the dual with a 6-5 decision win over Calik Kennedy securing third place for the Cardinals
The Cardinals are back in action Jan. 14 as they host No. 13 Millikin University in a dual meet. The matches are set to start at 7:30 pm inside Gregory Arena. For live coverage, click HERE.
