Women’s Wrestling Decimates Adrian Open

ADRIAN, Mich. (Nov. 14, 2022) - The North Central College women's wrestling team capped off an impressive weekend of action as they scored a staggering 422.5 team points on their way to a first place finish at the Adrian Open. The Cardinals saw 21 wrestlers place within the top-eight while seven wrestlers were crowned champions in their respective weight classes. 

The top-ranked Cardinals were heading into the Adrian Open after posting a perfect 7-0 record in their dual meets on Saturday, taking down three ranked opponents in the process. The Cardinals finished in first place as they scored 422.5 points, 188.5 more points than Indiana Tech in second place. Adrian College finished third (148.5), Sacred Heart University finished fourth (107.5) and UW-Stevens Point rounded out the top five with 98.5 points. 

Kicking off the tournament in the 101-pound weight class, Amber Turner fell in the first round to Sydney Kutzke of Indiana Tech before receiving two byes in the consolation first and second round. Turner bounced back as she defeated Miley Perkins of Adrian College by an 11-0 technical fall, advancing to the seventh place match. Turner would square off with Trinity Valentin of Northern Michigan University (NMU) and would take down Valentin by a 4-3 decision to take home seventh place. 

Sydney Petzinger, the top-ranked wrestler in the 109-pound weight class, started her day with a 10-0 technical fall win over Angel Winters of Adrian to move into the second round. Petzinger would pick up another 10-0 technical fall win over Shaina Hyre of UW-Stevens Point in the second round before defeating teammate Elizah Leonard in the quarterfinals match by an 11-0 technical fall. In the semifinals match, Petzinger would square off against No. 5 Izabella Frezzo of New Jersey City University and she would pin Frezzo in the second period to push her into the championship match. Petzinger would square off against teammate No. 3 Kendra Ryan in the first place bout and would defeat Ryan by a narrow 4-2 decision to claim the 109-pound title. 

Ryan (109) kicked off the tournament by pinning Bryn Sandhu of NMU before defeating Ariyanna Orosco of Elmira by a 10-0 technical fall to advance into the quarterfinals. Ryan would move into the semifinals after defeating Ahsia Torres of Sacred Heart by a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, Ryan faced teammate Trinity Malave and defeated Malave by a 9-5 decision before falling to Petzinger in the finals, claiming second place. Malave received a bye in the first round of the tournament before pinning Valereia Ahumada of Siena Heights to move into the quarterfinals match against teammate Maddie Avila. Malave would pin Avilia before falling to Ryan by a 9-5 decision in the semifinals. In the third place match, Malave defeated No. 5 Frezzo by a narrow 11-10 decision, claiming third. 

Avila (109) faced off against Korigan Wilkey of Indiana Tech in the first round where she took down Wilkey by a 4-3 decision to move into the second round. Avila would defeat Kylee Bently of Hiram College by a 12-2 technical fall before falling in the quarterfinals to Malave. Avila would bounce back as she defeated Torres of Sacred Heart by an 8-4 decision to move into the fifth place match against Leonard. Avilia would take home fifth place as she defeated Leonard by a 6-2 decision. Leonard (109) defeated Gabby Motz of Albion in the first round by a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Chelsea Horsley of Siena Heights in the second round. Leonard would fall to Petzinger in the quarterfinals but would bounce back by pinning Samantha Kruize of McKendree to move into the fifth place match. Leonard would fall to Avila and take home sixth place honors. 

Jaslynn Gallegos, the second ranked wrestler in the 116-pound weight class, started her tournament off by pinning No. 8 Natalie Majer of Carthage College in the first period before defeating Alexis Winecke of UW-Stevens Point by a 10-0 technical fall win. Gallegos would pick up back to back pins over Isabelle Silva of Indiana Tech in the quarterfinals and teammate Amaya Yoshizumi in the semifinals to advance to the championship match against Emma Jones of Indiana Tech. Gallegos would claim the 116-pound crown as she defeated Jones by a 10-0 technical fall. Yoshizumi (116) kicked off the day with a 10-0 technical fall win over Jayla Oberst of Albion before pinning Carleigh Czerneski of Adrian to move into the quarterfinals. Yoshizumi would defeat Nohea Moniz of Sacred Heart by an 8-0 decision before falling to Gallegos in the semifinals, pushing her into the third place match. Yoshizumi would take home fourth place as she fell to Elvie Villa of McKendree. 

In the 123-pound weight class, No. 3 Amani Jones received a bye in the first round before pinning Elizabeth Palmer of Davenport to send her to the quarterfinals. Jones would pick up another win as she defeated Aubree Kuhns of Indiana Tech by a 10-0 technical fall before defeating Naomi Henry by a 12-2 technical fall. In the championship match, Jones would fall to No. 6 Payton Stroud of McKendree by a 6-2 decision to take home second place. 

Sara Sterner (130) kicked off her tournament with a commanding 13-2 technical fall win over Danielle Ruiz of Albion before pinning Jarynn Strong of Adrian to advance to the quarterfinals match. Sterner would face Cameron Guerin of McKendree, the top-ranked wrestler in 130-pound, in the quarterfinals and would fall by a 10-0 technical fall to put her into the consolation side of the bracket. Sterner would bounce back and pin Charmayne Delong of Indiana Tech before finishing the day by pinning Shainia Murray of McKendree to claim fifth place. 

In the 136-pound weight class, Yele Aycock kicked off the tournament with an impressive 11-0 technical fall win over Mallory Chunat of Siena Heights before defeating Ellyana Kuzma of Indiana Tech by a 10-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinals, Aycock picked up her third-straight technical fall win as she defeated Jullia Mullane of Sacred Heart to advance to the semifinals. Aycock faced Amor Tuttle of UW-Stevens Point in the semifinals and would defeat Tuttle by an 11-2 decision before capping off the tournament with her fourth technical fall win as she defeated Hannah Palise of Albion to claim the 136-pound title. Emma Grimm (136) pinned Sydney Lewis of Indiana Tech in the first round of the tournament before defeating Phoenix Waters of Siena Heights by a 10-2 decision. In the quarterfinals, Grimm would fall to Tuttle of UW-Stevens Point by a 14-3 technical fall, pushing her into the consolation side of the bracket. Grimm would bounce back with a 6-2 decision win over Mullane of Sacred Heart before pinning Mackenzie Tayerle of Adrian to take home fifth place. Leah Bishop (136) started her tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Hannah Arledge-Teran of Albion before pinning Gabby Bradigan of Elmira. In the quarterfinals, Bishop would fall to Tayerle of Adrian and would take home an eighth place finish.  

In the 143-pound weight class, Kendall Bostelman moved on to the second round after receiving a first round bye and would defeat Samantha Snow of Indiana Tech by a 11-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinals, Bostelman would defeat Stephanie Floor of Gannon by a 10-0 technical fall before picking up her third-straight technical fall, defeating Marisa Roth of NMU 10-0. In the championship match, Bostelman capped off an impressive day as she pinned Clarissa Agostini of Adrian to claim the 143-pound title. Sydney Park (143) started the day by pinning Maia Crumb of Indiana Tech before defeating Isabel Worthing of Adrian by a 10-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinals, Park would pin her second opponent of the day as she defeated Katlyn Grant of UW-Stevens Point to move into the semifinals. Park would fall in the semifinals bout to Agostini of Adrian to put her in the third place match. Park fell to Roth of NMU in the third place match by an 11-0 technical fall to take home fourth place. 

Riley Aamold, the sixth ranked wrestler in 143-pounds, received a bye in the first round before pinning Michael Hamp of Rochester University to move into the quarterfinals. Aamold would fall in the quarterfinal to Agostini of Adrian College, putting her in the consolation side of the bracket. Aamold would bounce back and defeat Katlyn Grant of UW-Stevens Point by a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Glenda Veiga of Indiana Tech, claiming fifth place. Malea Palahniuk, the fifth-ranked wrestlers in 155-pounds, defeated Cydney Bassett of Indiana Tech by a 10-0 technical fall before defeating Lili Ujfalvi of Gannon in a tightly contested 2-1 decision. In the quarterfinals, Palahniuk would pin Charissa Fauber of Trine University before  defeating Nyla Burgess of Adrian by a narrow 2-1 decision. In the Championship match, Palahniuk would defeat Lydia Krauss of NMU to claim the 155-pound title. 

Yelena Makoyed, the top-ranked wrestler in the 170-pound weight class, started off her tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Taylor Schulz of UW-Stevens Point before defeating Payton Curley of Lourdes University by a 10-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinals, Makoyed would pick up her third-straight technical fall win as she defeated Kayley Rada of Adrian to push her into the semifinals match. Makoyed would continue her impressive day as she pinned Andreia Langley of Emory & Henry before claiming the 170-pound title with a 13-0 technical fall win over No. 5 Jade Herzer of UW-Stevens Point. 

Traeh Haynes, the seventh ranked wrestler in the 191-pound weight class, kicked off the tournament by pinning Hallie Lattery of UW-Stevens point, putting her in the quarterfinals match. Haynes would pin Tayana Labady of Elmira before pinning Brindelyn Eternicka of UW-Stevens point in the semifinals to push her into the championship match. Haynes would square off against teammate Brittyn Corbishley and would complete a perfect day as she pinned Corbishley to claim the 191-pound title. Corbishley (191) kicked off the tournament with two straight pins, as she defeated Sienna Lejeune of Adrian and Brittney Reed of Emory & Henry to advance to the semifinals. Corbishley would defeat teammate Alondra Aguayo by a 10-0 technical fall before falling to Haynes in the title match, taking home second place. Aguayo (191) received a bye in the first round before defeating Mia Delgado of Siena Heights by an 8-0 decision in the quarterfinals. Aguayo dropped her next two matches as she fell to Corbishley in the semifinals and to Labady of Elmire in the consolation third round, putting her in the fifth place match. Aguayo would bounce back as she pinned Eternicka of UW-Stevens Point to take home fifth place. 

The top-ranked Cardinals take a short break from the action and return home on Nov. 23 as they take on Carthage College in a dual meet at 6 pm inside Gregory Arena.
