STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Nov. 6, 2022) - Traveling up north to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for their first tournament of the season, the top-ranked North Central College women's wrestling team had 23 wrestlers place in the top six while eight wrestlers took home first place in their respective weight classes.
In the 101-pound weight class, Karina Torres kicked off the tournament by pinning Miley Perkins of Adrian College before picking up two more pins over Kelly Enriquez and Trinity Valentin. Torres would face teammate Amber Turner in her final match and would defeat Turner by a 10-0 decision to take home first place. Turner would take home fifth place in the 101-pound weight class.
In the 109-pound weight class, No.1 Sydney Petzinger received a bye in the first round of the tournament before pinning Gada Bryant of Eureka College to push her into the semifinals. She would defeat Valeria Ahumada of Siena Heights by a 10-0 technical fall to put her in the 1st place match against teammate Trinity Malave. Petzinger would defeat Malave by a 10-0 technical fall, taking home first place. Malave kicked off the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over Gabby Motz of Albion before pinning Modestie Hitchcock of Adrian to push her into the semifinals match. Malave would face teammate Maddie Avila in the semifinals and would defeat Avila by a 5-1 decision before falling to Petzinger to take home second place.
Avila won her first match of the tournament as she defeated Cici Plaud of Siena Heights by a 12-0 technical fall before defeating teammate Angelina Graff by a 6-1 decision. Avila would fall to Malave in the semifinals, pushing her into the consolation semifinals where she would defeat Shaina Hyre of UW-Stevens Point by a 6-0 decision. In the third place match, Avila would fall to Ahumada by a 2-0 decision to take home fourth place. Graff received a bye in the first round of the tournament before falling to Avila in the quarterfinals. Graff would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall and a pin in the consolation second and third round before falling to Ahumada by a 12-6 decision. Graff would secure fifth place by Forfeit.
In the 116-pound weight class, No. 2 Jaslynn Gallegos would receive a bye in the first round before pinning Alexis Hart-Butcher in the quarterfinals. Gallegos would pick up her second pin of the day as she defeated Carleigh Czerneski of Adrian to put her in the Championship match against teammate Amaya Yoshizumi. Gallegos would complete a perfect day as she pinned Yoshizumi to take home first place. Yoshizumi faced Izzy Pfeifer in the first round and would defeat Pfeifer by a 10-0 technical fall before defeating Emily Mendez by a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals. She would face Jayla Oberst of Albion in the semifinals and she would pin Oberst before falling to Gallegos, taking home second place.
In the 123-pound weight class, No. 3 Amani Jones received a bye in the first round before defeating Alejandra Perez by a 10-0 technical fall in the second round. Jones would pick up two more technical falls as she defeated Tateum Park and Rose Ann Marshall to put her in the first place match. Jones would square off with No. 7 Gabby Skidmore of Augsburg University in the championship match and Jones would defeat Skidmore by a 6-2 decision to take home the 123-pound crown. Dakota Drew (123) also received a bye in the first round before defeating Cerenity Bergeron of Siena Heights by an 11-0 technical fall. Drew would fall to Skidmore in the quarterfinals match before bouncing back with a 13-2 technical fall win over Sandie Pfeil. In the consolation fourth round, Drew would fall to Marshall by a 9-8 decision, putting her in the fifth place match. Drew would fall in another one point decision as she fell to Tateum Park by a 6-5 decision, taking home sixth place.
In the 130-pound weight class, Sara Sterner received a bye in the first round before pinning Danielle Ruiz in the quarterfinals match. Sterner would pick up her second win of the day as she would defeat Jaryn Strong by a 10-0 technical fall before falling to Alexis Janiak by a 10-0 technical fall in the championship match, taking home second place. Halle White also received a bye in the first round but would fall to Janiak in the quarterfinals, putting her in the consolation side of the bracket. White would pick up two technical falls over Sharon Leon and teammate Charlene Bahnfleth to put her into the consolation semifinals. White would pin Strong before defeating Ruiz by a 10-0 technical fall to claim third place.
In the 136-pound weight class, Yele Aycock would receive a bye in the first round before pinning Faith Romain of Northern Michigan to put her in the quarterfinals match. Aycock would defeat Mallory Chunat of Siena Heights by a 15-2 technical fall before defeating the top-ranked wrestler in 136 pounds, Nina Makem of Augsburg by a 2-1 decision. Aycock took home first place after pinning Diana Dzasezeva in the championship match. Emma Grimm received a bye in the first round before pinning Hannah Arledge-Teran in the second round. Grimm would fall to Autumn Flanigan in the quarterfinals, putting her in the consolation side of the bracket. Grimm would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall over teammate Raena Schledwitz before falling to Maken in the fourth round. Grimm would get her revenge in the fifth place match as she beat Flanigan by an 8-2 decision to take home fifth place.
In the 143-pound weight class, Kendall Bostelman won her first match by a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Kya Rybachel to put her into the semifinals match. Bostelman would pin teammate Riley Aamold before falling to No. 3 Katie Lange in the championship match. Salome Walker kicked off the tournament by pinning Audrey Driskell of Eureka College before defeating Taylor Cutler by a 11-0 technical fall. Walker would fall to Lange in the semifinals but would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall, putting her in the third place match. Walker would defeat Aamold by a 6-3 decision to take home third place. Aamold defeated Phoenix Waters by a 10-0 technical fall in the first round before pinning Katlyn Grant, putting her in the semifinals match. Aamold would fall to Bostelman before pinning Marisa Roth in the consolation semifinals. Aamold took home fourth place after falling to Walker by a 6-3 decision in the third place match.
In the 155-pound weight class, No. 4 Sara Sulejmani would receive a first round bye before picking up two technical fall wins over Jaelynn Trantanella and Megan Vondrasek to put her in the semifinals match. Sulejmani would pin Zoë Hussar before defeating Nyla Burgess by a 10-0 technical fall, claiming first place. No. 5 Malea Palahniuk also received a first round bye before pinning Lydia Krauss in the second round. Palahniuk would fall in the quarterfinals match, putting her in the consolation third round where she would defeat teammate Shelby Ottum by a 4-1 decision. Palahniuk would move into the third place match as she beat Hussar by a 12-1 technical fall. She would take home fourth place after falling to Vondrasek in the third place match.
In the 170-pound weight class, No. 1 Yelena Makoyed picked up two straight pins over Claire Matthews and Niyasia McCampbell to put her in the semifinals match. Makoyed would defeat Kayley Rada by a 10-0 technical fall before defeating Ashley Lekas by a 11-0 technical fall to claim first place. Fiona McConnell won her first match of the day as she defeated Meara Hayes by a 10-0 technical fall before falling to No. 5 Jade Herzer in the quarterfinals match. McConnell would bounce back by pinning Matthews in the consolation second round before defeating Sawyer Graham by a 6-0 decision. McConnell would pin Rada in the consolation semifinals before falling to Herzer by a 6-1 decision, taking home fourth place.
In the 191-pound weight class, No. 4 Brittyn Corbishley received a bye in the first round before pinning Maia Foster, pushing her into the semifinals match. Corbishley would defeat Isabelle Huss by a 12-2 decision before taking home first place with an 8-2 decision win over Faith Tuttle. Alondra Aguayo would also receive a first round bye but would fall to Tuttle in the first round. Aguayo would bounce back with a 9-4 decision win over Angie Guy and a 10-1 decision win over Melissa Jacobs. Aguayo would fall to Huss in the consolation semifinals, putting her in the fifth place match against Mia Delgado. Aguayo took home fifth place with a 7-4 decision win over Delgado.
The top-ranked Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 12 as they travel to Adrian College to compete in the Adrian Duals. The action is set to start at 10 am inside the Merillat Center.
