CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Feb. 12, 2022) - Winning their fourth and fifth straight matches of the spring season, the North Central men's tennis team beat Coe College, 5-4, and Central College, 8-1 in their road trip to Cedar Rapids.
Facing a tough doubles team from Coe College to start the day, the Kohawks swept doubles play as the Cardinals needed to win five of the six singles matches to earn the win. At the No. 1 spot, Rami Hemaidan, the No. 20 ranked singles player in the region, beat Ramon Villarroig Martinez 6-1, 6-2 to get Coe their fourth win of the match.
With their backs against the wall, Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez earned the first win on the day for North Central, 6-3, 6-3. Tallying the second win for the Cardinals was Javier Suarez Balsera at the No. 2 position before Matthew Sengphommachanh and Colten Way each locked up wins in their respective matches. Morgan Red clutched a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Graham Peterson in the No. 6 spot to give North Central a 5-4 victory.
The Cardinals got off to a better start in doubles play by sweeping all three matches to take a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play. Andy Hinch won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot while Steven Mears earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 Suarez Balsera, Gonzalez Fernandez, and Sengphonnachanh each won their singles matches to take an 8-1 win over Central as the Cardinals move to 5-1 on the spring season.
The Cardinals host both the Rose-Hulman Insititute of Technology and Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday. The first match begins at 12:45 PM inside the Naperville Tennis Club.
