Stevens Point, Wis. (Feb. 20, 2022) - Competing in the Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Northwest Regional Tournament, the North Central College women's wrestling team took second place while 15 wrestlers punched their ticket into the National Tournament.
Riley Aamold and
Yelena Makoyed each took home an individual title in their respective weight classes.
The Cardinals came in second with 156.5 points just behind Simon Fraser University (184 points). Augsburg University took home third with 177.5 points, followed by UW-Stevens Point (61.5) in fourth and Pacific University (17) in fifth. Trine University took home sixth place with 16.5 points followed by Northern Michigan University (15), Carthage College (11.5), Lakeland University (4.5) and Aurora University (4).
In the 109-pound weight class, Sydney Petzinger started off the tournament by pinning Riley Morrison of Trine University putting her into the semifinals match against Alexia Seal of Simon Fraser University. Petzinger would fall to Seal by a 8-6 decision putting her into the consolation semifinals. She would bounce back and defeat Bryn Sandhu of Northern Michigan by a 10-0 technical fall before defeating teammate Angelina Graff to take home third place and a trip to the national tournament. Graff received a bye in her first match and in the semifinals match she fell to Emily Shilson of Augsburg University putting her into the consolation semifinals. Graff would bounce back and pin Riley Morrison of Trine before falling to Petzinger, earning fourth place.
In the 116-pound weight class, Mateah Roehl received a bye in the first round before defeating teammate Kendra Ryan putting her into the championship match against Karla Godinez-Gonzalez of Simon Fraser. Roehl would fall to Gonzalez by a 10-0 technical fall giving her second place and a trip to the national tournament. Ryan started off the day pinning Morgan Bethea of UW-Stevens Point before falling to Roehl in the semifinals match. Ryan would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall over Natalie Majer of Carthage College before tallying another 10-0 technical fall over Abby Nelson of UW-Stevens Point, taking home third place.
In the 123-pound weight class, Amani Jones received a bye in the first round before defeating Katelynn Gunderson of Lakeland University by a 10-0 technical fall. Jones would take on Gabby Skidmore of Augsburg University in the semifinals match, she would defeat Skidmore by a 12-1 technical fall putting her into the championship match. Jones would fall to Alexandra Hedrick of Simon Fraser earning second place. Asia Nguyen-Smith would start the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Angelica Torres Lima of UW-Stevens Point. In the semifinals match, Nguyen-Smith would fall to Hedrick putting her into the consolation semifinals. She would defeat Jocyln Bhatha of Simon Fraser by a 12-1 technical fall before falling to Charlotte Kouyoumtjian of Augsburg in the third place match, taking home fourth place.
In the 130-pound weight class, Niya Teresita Gaines received a bye in the first round before defeating teammate Yele Aycock by a 12-6 decision in the semifinals match. Teresita Gaines would face Lauren Mason of Simon Fraser in the championship match. Mason would defeat Teresita Gaines by a 14-5 decision, earning second place. Aycock started the tournament with a 9-0 decision win over Savannah Vold of Augsburg before falling to Teresita Gaines in the semifinals. Aycock would bounce back and defeat Autumn Flanigan of Augsburg by a 10-0 technical fall putting her in the third place match against Marquesis Haintz of Simon Frasier, Aycock would fall to Haintz earring fourth place.
In the 136-pound weight class, Sara Sulejmani took down Addison Young of UW-Stevens point by a 12-1 technical fall in the quarterfinals before earning another technical fall win over Sierra Brown Ton of Augsburg in the semifinals. In the championship match, Sulejmani would face Nina Makem of Augsburg. Makem would defeat Sulejmani by an 8-0 decision, giving Sulejmani a second place finish. Flora Vizi would face Sierra Brown in the first round and would fall 6-1 but would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall win over Addison Young. Vizi would defeat Jade Trolland of Simon Fraser by a 3-2 decision putting her into the third place match against Megan Struble. Vizi would defeat Struble by a 10-0 technical fall taking home third place.
In the 143-pound weight class, Aamold started off the tournament by pinning Adele Senzig of Carthage before defeating Kya Rybachek of Augsburg by a 15-4 technical fall in the semifinals. Kim Nunez would start off the tournament by pinning Sagel Bush of Pacific University before defeating Clara Scaglioni of Simon Fraser by a 10-0 technical fall. Aamold and Nunez would face in the 143-pound championship match, Aamold would defeat Nunez by a 5-2 decision, giving them first and second place.
In the 155-pound weight class, Tiera Jimerson received a bye in the first round before falling to Marlynne Deede of Augsburg by a 6-3 decision. Jimerson would bounce back and pin Gillian Venditti of Pacific University putting her in the third place match. Jimerson would pin Kahlea Jolly of Augsburg, taking home third place.
In the 170-pound weight class, Makoyed started off the tournament by pinning Ashton Francis of Trine in 15 seconds before picking up another pin against Tabitha Breitrick of UW-Stevens Point putting her into the championship match. Makoyed would defeat Emily Cue of Simon Fraser by a 12-0 technical fall, taking home the 170-pound title.
In the 191-pound weight class, Amber Latta received a bye in the first round and in the semifinals match, Latta would defeat Faith Tuttle of Augsburg by a 3-2 decision putting her in the championship match. Latta would fall to Katja Osteen of Simon Fraser, taking home second place.

Joe Norton was named Northwest Region Women's Coach of the Year.
The Cardinals are back in action on Mar. 4 and 5 as they travel to Adrian, Mich. to compete in the Cliff Keen NCWWC National Championships at Adrian College.
