Feb. 22, 2022 - In addition to picking up three straight victories last weekend, the North Central College baseball team opened the 2022 campaign with another sweep Tuesday, claiming the first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards of the new campaign.

The 20th-ranked Cardinals began the season with a trio of games at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale, defeating Blackburn University (12-1), DePauw University (6-3) and Wilmington University (16-4). 

Catcher Rob Marinec has been selected the CCIW's Hitter of the Week. The senior went 8 for 14 at the plate with a double, a triple, two home runs and nine runs batted in. Marinec's three-run home run against DePauw put the Cardinals in front for good, and he finished the weekend with a 4 for 5 effort against Wilmington which saw him come within a double of hitting for the cycle.

Senior pitcher Luke Lamm, meanwhile, was named the Pitcher of the Week after pitching six innings to get the Opening Day win over Blackburn. He allowed just three hits and no earned runs while striking out nine.

The Cardinals are set to travel to Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana for three games Friday and Saturday.
