Men’s Tennis Clipped by Warhawks, 5-4

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (Feb. 25, 2022) -  Facing a strong University of Wisconsin-Whitewater team, the North Central College men's tennis team fell in a tightly contested battle 5-4 at Lake Geneva Tennis Club on Friday evening. 

The duo of Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez cruised to an 8-3 win over John Zakowski and Alex Gray, the 17th-ranked doubles team in the nation. Also earning a win in doubles play was the tandem of Javier Suarez Balsera and Morgan Red who won 8-7 to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead into singles play.

To open singles play, Matthew Sengphommachanh won 6-4, 6-2 over Ryan Mitchell in the No. 5 spot. After falling in the No. 1, 3, and 4 positions, Suarez Balsera battled to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot against the 16th-ranked singles player in the country, Cole Lindwall. The match sat at 4-4 with the No. 6 match up in the air. Red faced Brendan Pietila of UW-Whitewater who prevailed 6-3, 7-5 and secured the win for the Warhawks.

The Cardinals host the Illinois Institute of Technology on Friday, March 4th at Naperville Tennis Club. Action is set to begin at 7:30 PM.
