Men’s Tennis Earns Two Ranked Wins in Madison

MADISON, Wis. (Feb. 5, 2022) - Facing two ranked opponents on the day, the North Central College men's tennis team earned two statement wins over No. 39 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (6-3) and No. 40 Luther College (8-1) inside of Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Cardinals began the day by sweeping doubles play against the Blugolds before Ramon Vilarroig Martinez won 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 position. Javier Suarez Balsera secured the win at No. 2 by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Matthew Sengphommachanh and Morgan Red won in their respective positions to lock down the 6-3 win.

Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez took on Nyathi Motlojoa and Max Leon, the ninth-ranked doubles tandem in the country, and earned a hard-fought win, 8-7 to open singles play against the Norse. Completing their second sweep of the day, Way/Andy Hinch and Suarez Balsera/Red each won doubles matches to give the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.

In singles play, Vilarroig Martinez downed Motlojoa 6-3, 6-4, who is the 19 ranked singles player in the region. Suarez Balsera clinched the win at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Luke Westholder. Way, Sengphommachanh, and Red also tallied wins over the Norse to give North Central an 8-1 victory. 

The Cardinals move to 3-1 on the year before taking on Coe College and Central College next weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
