Makoyed & Haynes Lead the Way at Grand View Open

Des Moines, Iowa (Feb. 5, 2022) - The North Central College women's wrestling team had 12 wrestlers place at the Grand View University Open while Yelena Makoyed and Traeh Haynes took home first place in their respective weight class. 

In the 109-pound weight class, Sydney Petzinger started off the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over Samantha Weeks of the University of Jamestown before pinning Zoey Mzeru of Avila University in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Petzinger would defeat her next two opponents, Rose Ann Marshal of UW-Stevens Point and Jasmine Godinez of Texas Wesleyan University, putting her into the first place match. Petzinger would face off against Emily Shilson of Augsburg University, Petzinger would fall 8-5 to Shilson earning her second place. 

Angelina Graff placed sixth in the 109-pound weight class after receiving a first round bye. Graff would pin Alexis Saldivar of Texas Wesleyan University in the second round before falling to Mia Palumbo of Iowa Wesleyan University in the quarterfinals. Graff would bounce back defeating Samantha Weeks in the consolations fourth round and Chloe Krebsbach by a 10-0 technical fall putting her in the consolation semifinals. Graff would fall to Jasmine Godinez before falling to Julianne Moccia of Gannon University in the fifth place match. 

In the 116-pound weight class, Kendra Ryan received a bye in the first round before defeating Lillianna Campbell of Missouri Valley College by a 10-0 technical fall putting her into the quarterfinal match. Ryan would defeat her next two opponents, Destiny Dominguez and Ashley Gooman by a 10-0 and 13-3 technical fall, putting her in the championship match. Ryan would fall to Camille Fournier of Texas Wesleyan by a 10-4 earning herself second place. Mateah Roehl placed third in the 116-pound weight class, Roehl received a bye in the first round before defeating Catherine Steinkamp by an 11-0 technical fall. Roehl would fall to Camille Fournier in the quarterfinals match but would bounce back with three straight technical fall wins putting her in the third place match. Roehl would pin Anja Tschohl of Colorado Mesa securing third place for the tournament. 

In the 123-pound weight class, Amani Jones placed fourth and Asia Nguyen-Smith placed fifth. Jones started off the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Gabby Skidmore before receiving a bye in the second round. Jones would fall in the quarterfinal match to Devin Patton of Texas Wesleyan before winning three straight matches, all by technical fall, putting her in the third place match. Jones would fall to Adrenna Turner of Grandview University taking home fourth place. Nguyen-Smith received a bye in the first round before defeating Sandie Pfeil of Augustana College by a 10-0 technical fall. She would tally another win by defeating Taylin Long by a 4-0 decision before defeating Adrienna Turner of Grand View University by an 8-4 decision. Nguyen-Smith would fall in the semifinal match to Marissa Gallegos before falling to teammate, Jones, in the consolation semifinals. She would defeat Devin Patton by a 12-1 technical fall earning herself fifth place in the tournament. 

In the 130-pound weight class, Niya Teresita Gaines placed fifth while Yele Aycock took home sixth. Gaines started the tournament with two pins over Avery Thomason and Kara Rohlf before falling to Anya Knappenberger by a 5-2 decision. Gaines would bounce back and earn two more pins before defeating Willow Barnes by a 10-0 technical fall. She would pin Ngao Shoa Whitthorn in the seventh round before falling to Knappenberger by a 6-4 decision. In the fifth place match, Gaines would defeat Aycock by an 8-0 decision. Aycock received a bye in the first round  before defeating Sabrina King of Central Methodist University by a 12-2 technical fall. In her next match, Aycock would defeat Leidaly Rivera by a 10-1 decision before falling to Lexi Basham in the quarterfinals. Aycock would bounce back and secure two technical falls wins before falling 6-3 in the consolation semifinals to Andrea Schlabach. Aycock would face Gaines in the fifth place match and fall by an 8-0 decision securing sixth place. 

In the 143-pound weight class, Kim Nunez started off the tournament with a loss to Kya Rybachek before receiving a bye in the second round. Nunez would bounce back and pin her next opponent before defeating Tayler Peligrino-Hayase by a 12-1 technical fall. Nunez would pick up two more pins on her way to the consolation semifinals and would defeat Rybachek by a 11-6 decision putting her in the third place match. Nunez would fall to Josette Partney by a 10-0 technical fall earning herself fourth place in the tournament. 

Tiera Jimerson placed third in the 155-pound weight class, she started off the tournament by pinning Kahlea Jolly before defeating Tyeisha-Shaylis Takamori by an 11-0 technical fall. Jimerson would pin Michaela Blume in the quarterfinal match before falling in the semifinals to Tiyahna Askew. Jimerson would bounce back and defeat Sadi Antoque by a 3-2 decision before defeating India Page 8-2 giving herself third place. 

In the 170-pound weight class, Makoyed started off the tournament with three straight pins. Makoyed pinned Melena Jones, Yarissa Gallo and Madison Horn putting her into the semifinals match against Annabelle Helm. Makoyed would defeat Helm by a 10-0 technical fall before pinning Jade Herzer in the championship match earning herself first place. 

In the 191-pound weight class, Haynes started off the tournament with two straight pins over Grace Brown and teammate Amber Latta. In the quarterfinal match, Haynes would defeat America Lopez by a 11-1 technical fall before pinning Jayleen Sekona in the semifinals match. Haynes would defeat Faith Tuttle in the championship match to earn herself a first place finish. 

The Cardinals are back in on Feb. 12 as they travel to Lebanon, Ill to compete in the Bearcat Open hosted by McKendree University.
