PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2022) - Doubling its workload on the first day of its Spring Break trip to the Snowbird Classic, the North Central College baseball team found itself on both ends of a shutout Friday as the fourth-ranked Cardinals defeated Saint John's University (Minnesota), 18-0, before a 7-0 loss to the second-ranked Marietta College.

North Central (8-1) opened up a lead it would not relinquish in the first inning against the Johnnies (5-7) as Luke Lehnen hit a three-run home run. Lehnen scored on a double by Justin Rios in the third before a two-run homer by Jared Wojcik and an RBI single by Michael Patterson. Lehnen and Wojcik drove in runs in the fourth on a groundout and a single, respectively, and a sacrifice fly by Rob Marinec and a single by Paul Beverly plated runs in the fifth.

The Cardinals closed the scoring with a seven-run sixth inning. Dom Listi drove in two runs with a double, Marinec delivered another sacrifice fly and Wojcik and Brent Swenson each delivered run-scoring singles. Listi and Beverly also scored on separate wild pitches.

Wojcik went 3 for 4 in the day's first game, while Listi finished 3 for 5 and Lehnen scored three runs while driving in four. Jason Shanner pitched six scoreless innings to get the win (2-0), allowing six hits and three walks while striking out seven. Robert Deischer allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings of relief, registering four strikeouts.

Marietta (8-2) jumped in front in the nightcap with a four-run second inning, taking advantage of a walk and two hit batters. The Cardinals had a scoring opportunity with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, but a strikeout and a groundout ended North Central's best scoring opportunity of the contest. Beverly went 3 for 4 at the plate while AJ Kutcher pitched three scoreless innings in relief of starter Luke Lamm

The Cardinals are set to take on eighth-ranked Webster University (5-1) at Centennial Field No. 10 beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern time. Click HERE for links to live coverage.
