First Half Surge Pushes Cardinals Past Spartans

Mar. 22, 2022 - Playing in their first game at home since Mar. 9, the North Central College men's lacrosse team got back in the win column as they took down the University of Dubuque Spartans 11-5 on a chilly night inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. 

The Cardinals (2-4, 0-0 CCIW) jumped out to an early lead as Jack Moran scored off an assist from Luke Illgen to score the first goal of the game. Joey D'Cuhna would score the second goal off a pass from Scott Allgood which started a four goal run to end the first quarter putting the Cardinals up 5-0. Moran would tally his second goal of the game before Allgood would extend the lead to six with seven minutes left in the half. The Spartans (2-6) would tally their first goal of the game with just under a minute remaining in the first half. The Cardinals would go into halftime with a 7-1 lead. 

The Spartans came out of the half ready to attack as they tallied two quick goals cutting the Cardinal lead to four. D'Cuhna would tally his third goal of the game with 11 minutes remaining as he finished off a pass from Allgood. After another Spartan penalty, Illgen would put the Cardinals up by five once again as he scored his second goal of the game during a man up opportunity. The Spartans would score with just eight seconds remaining in the third giving the Cardinals a 9-5 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Illgen and Rylan McQueary would score the final two goals of the game, giving the Cardinals a 11-5 win over the Spartans. 

D'Cuhna and Illgen each had three goals while Moran had two and McQueary, Tom Eberhardt and Allgood each had one goal. Allgood led the team with three assists while Moran and Illgen each had two. Dylan Mlinarich led the team with three caused turnovers while Dylan Andersen led the team with six ground balls and went 7-9 on face-offs. Jake Allgood tallied 11 saves as he improved his record to 2-4 on the season. 

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on the Calvin University Knights at 1 pm inside Zuidema Field.
