WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 19, 2022) - Locking up the No. 1 seed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament for the second straight year, the North Central College men's tennis team downed Wheaton College 5-4 in a hard-fought match to improve to 20-2 on the season and 6-0 in CCIW play.
Andy Hinch and Colten Way opened up the scoring for the Cardinals with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 doubles spot. Giving North Central a lead heading into singles play, Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez worked their way to an 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles to take a 2-1 advantage.
Vilarroig Martinez and Way each locked up wins in their respective singles matches to put the Cardinals one match away from securing the win. The Thunder took wins at the 5 and 6 positions before Gonzalez Fernandez clinched the team victory with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win at No. 2 singles.
North Central wraps up the regular season on Sunday as they host Carroll for senior day. That match is set to begin at 11 AM.
