Apr. 2, 2022 - The North Central College women's lacrosse team dropped their fourth consecutive game this afternoon as the Knights of Calvin University stormed into Naperville and took down the Cardinals 18-5 on a cold and rainy day inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Knights (3-5, 0-0 MIAA) controlled the first quarter as they went on to score four unanswered goals to start the game before Tanya Czosek got the Cardinals (2-8, 0-0 CCIW) on the board with 38 seconds left, putting the Cardinals down three heading into the second quarter. The Knights came out of the first intermission ready to extend their lead as Megan Gilbert tallied her third goal of the game but the Cardinals would cut that lead to two as Abby MacKenzie and Czosek scored to bring the score to 5-3 in favor of the Knights. However, the Knights would respond by going on a three goal stretch to put them up 8-3 heading into halftime.
The Knights would add onto their rally as they scored three more unanswered goals to start the second half which was started by Kelly Ruha. MacKenzie would tally her second goal off the game late in the third quarter, putting the Cardinals down 11-4. The Knights offense would not let up as they went on a seven goal run which started late in the third quarter and ended after Czosek her third goal of the game with 20 seconds left but it wasn't enough as the Knights left town with an 18-5 win.
Czosek led the Cardinals with three goals while MacKenzie had two goals. Ellie Gosselin led the team with five ground balls and one caused turnover. Abigail Widd tallied eight saves as she fell to 2-8 on the season. Widd's eight saves today broke the single season record for saves with 138, this record was previously held by Sarah Hon and has not been broken since the 2012 season.
The Cardinals open up College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Wednesday, Apr. 6 as they take a trip to Kenosha, Wis. to take on the Carthage College Firebirds. The opening face-off is set for 6 pm inside Art Keller Field.
