Women’s Lacrosse Drops CCIW Opener at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 6, 2022) - Opening up College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play, the North Central College women's lacrosse team fell to the Firebirds of Carthage College 19-5 inside Art Keller Field. 

The Firebirds (10-1, 1-0 CCIW) jumped out to an early lead as Rachel Harris tallied the first goal of the game before Julia Clarke tied the game up at one with nine minutes to play in the first quarter. The Firebirds controlled the rest of the first half scoring five unanswered goals before tallying two more at the start of the second quarter giving them an 8-1 lead with ten minutes left in the half. After a Firebirds penalty, Berit Vandenbroucke would score, cutting the Firebird lead to six. The Firebirds would go on another four goal run to extend their lead to 12-2 heading into the half. 

After a quick Firebirds goal, the Cardinals (2-9, 0-1 CCIW) would tally two quick goals from Tanya Czosek and Vandenbroucke, cutting the lead to nine. The Firebirds would control the rest of the third quarter and most of the fourth as they rattled off six unanswered goals to bring the lead to 19-4. Vandenbroucke would tally her third goal of the game bringing the score to 19-5, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell 19-5. 

Vandenbroucke led the team with three goals while Clarke and Czosek each had one goal. Tori Leonard led the team with five ground balls while Clarke and Hannah Park each had one caused turnover. 

The Cardinals (2-9, 0-1 CCIW) are back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 13 as they host Augustana College (IL) in their second game of CCIW play. The opening face-off is set for 7 pm inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
