MADISON, Wis. (Apr. 2, 2022) - Competing in the final day of the Midwest Invitational, the North Central College women's tennis team fell to No. 15 Kenyon College and Hope College on Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The match started with singles play as Sydney Sawyer earned a win by default with Kenyon shorthanded. Kenyon won each of the remaining singles matches to clinch the victory. In doubles action, Hannah Hougland/Alaina Kanthaphixay earned a hard-fought 8-6 win while Kaeli Smashey and Natalie Bassett won 8-4 in the No. 2 spot. Sawyer and Mikayla Edquiban won by default at No. 3 doubles as the Cardinals fell, 4-5.
Taking on Hope College in match two of the day, Smashey/Bassett won 8-2 for the first victory of the match. The Flying Dutch evened the score at No. 1 doubles before Sawyer/Edquiban battled to an 8-6 win to close out doubles play.
Kanthaphixay secured the first win for North Central in singles play with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Saydee Johns. Hope earned wins at No. 2 and No. 6 before Edquiban beat Alexi Lewis 6-3, 1-6, 10-7. The Fighting Dutch secured the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn a 5-4 win.
The Cardinals take on No. 1 University of Chicago on Saturday morning at 9 AM before hosting the Illinois Institute of Technology at 2:30 PM.
