Apr. 25, 2022 - The North Central College softball team shut out the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-0 in game one of their doubleheader before dropping the second game 2-0 to the Warhawks at Shanower Family Field on Monday.

The Cardinals got their first run of game one in the second inning thanks to an RBI double by Talia Torosian scoring Alyssa Sturino. Later in the second inning with two outs and runners on the corners, Katie Del Re hit an RBI single through the right side to score Torosian putting the Cardinals up 2-0.

Senior pitcher Gianna Corban allowed little room for the Warhawks to attempt a comeback as she struck out seven batters in the following three innings before the Cardinals had their opportunity to extend their lead.

In the sixth inning, three Cardinals had hits on the struggling Warhawks defense. With bases loaded, Torosian reached on a fielder's choice to score Breanna Adams, while Allison Lambert singled up the middle for two RBIs in Sturino and Jaime Smith prompting a pitching change. North Central held off the Warhawks in a quick three strikeout seventh inning taking the win 5-0.

Torosian and A. Lambert led the team with two RBIs while Del Re had one. Six Cardinals made up the team's seven hits while Adams led with two. Corban, now 12-3 on the season, pitched all seven innings on game one totaling 13 strikeouts and allowing only three hits.

As the temperature dropped and the wind picked up, the Cardinals had difficulty shutting down the Warhawks. Back-to-back bunts in the third inning with two runners on allowed the Warhawks their first run of the day. An RBI single by Brooke Mangler put the Warhawks up 2-0 in the third inning which would ultimately be the final score.

Sarah Lynch led the Cardinals in game two with a pair of hits – one being a double – while Torosian had one. Katie Del Re achieved her seventh stolen base on the season. Adams (9-5) pitched six innings of game two striking out one and allowing seven hits. Corban came in for the final inning, striking out two and allowing no hits.

The Cardinals host Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday, Apr. 28 for their final College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) match-up of the regular season.
