Makoyed Claims Second Consecutive Gold Medal

MADRID, Spain (July 9, 2022) - After claiming the gold medal in her international debut at the Matteo Pellicone ranking event two weeks ago, North Central College women's wrestler Yelena Makoyed took home her second consecutive gold medal at the Grand Prix of Spain this afternoon. 

Makoyed took on Maria Oryashkove of Bulgaria in the first round in the 76 kg bracket, she would defeat Oryashkove by a decision. Makoyed would take on Carla Lera of Spain in the second round and would pin Lera to push her into the quarterfinals match. Makoyed would pick up her second pin of the tournament against Taylor Follensbee of Canada to put herself in the semifinals match

Makoyed would face off against teammate Tristan Kelly in the semifinals, she would pin Kelly to pick up her third pin of the tournament and a chance at another gold medal. In the gold medal match, Makoyed would face the 2018 Gold Medalist, Justina Di-Stasio of Canada, she would pin Di-Stasio for her fourth pin of the tournament and a 76 kg gold medal. 

Makoyed has added to her already impressive resume as she is now a two-time National Champion, three-time All-American, 2021 Pan-Am Gold Medalist and a two-time Gold Medalist at the senior level.
