Men's Soccer Vs North Park Ends In A Draw

Chicago, Ill. (Oct. 11, 2023) - On a rainy night at Holmgren Athletic Complex, the No. 5 North Central College men's soccer team tied 1-1 with North Park University in a tough fought battle.
 
North Central struck first on goal with Herman Hesby putting a header on goal but North Park goalkeeper Jasso Raul was able to make the stop.
 
16 minutes later, Jack Fairwood had an attempt on goal but the ball was blocked on the way to the net. Two minutes later Jared Urueta took a shot on goal but was off target.
 
In the 33rd minute, Vikings defender Carl Karlsson received a red card, giving the Cardinals the man advantage for the entirety of the game. In the next 3 minutes Urueta had two more shots on goal but were just off target.
 
The half ended in a stalemate after Will Mayer took the last shot on goal, but ultimately went above the net.
 
The Vikings struck early in the second half. North Park received a penalty kick in the 47th minute where Willy Wickman kicked the ball out of Cardinal goalkeeper Sid Marquardt's reach, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
 
In the 56th minute, Urueta had a close shot on goal but hit the crossbar. Aiden Westerberg was next to take a shot on goal for the Cardinals but Jasso kept the ball out of the net. Only seconds later Pepijn Hakstege had an attempt on goal but Jasso made the stop.
 
With nine minutes left on the clock, the Cardinals were traveling down the field, Arthur Glinkin made a pass to Westerberg. Westerberg found the room to pass to Fairwood in front of the net. Fairwood put the ball right into the back of the net, tying the game.
 
Glinkin made one final attempt on goal in the 89th minute but the shot went wide right and the game ended in a stalemate.
 
The Cardinals led the game in shots 19-6, while Marquardt tallied one save.
 
Fairwood has led the Cardinals to two ties and a win in the past three games. He has tallied a career high of five goals and four assists on the season.
 
Meanwhile, North Central made program history on Tuesday afternoon by being ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
 
North Central travels to Waukesha, Wisconsin to take on Carroll University on Saturday, October 14th at 7:30 p.m.
