Waukesha, Wis. (Oct. 14, 2023) - No. 5 North Central College men's soccer team picked up their third conference win, after beating Carroll University 2-1 on Saturday night. North Central is now 12-1-2 on the season.
The Cardinals led the first half of the game with four shots on goal. In the 15th minute of the game the Cardinals received a penalty kick.
Aidan Westerberg took the kick for the Cardinals and fired the shot out of the Pioneer goalkeeper Jessper Johannassen's reach.
Four minutes later,
Pepijn Hakstege attempted a shot on goal, but was off target, sending the ball to the left of the net. The Cardinals scored again in the 24th minute of the game to give them a 2-0 lead.
In the 32nd minute Carroll received a penalty kick. Midfielder Marti Solenalles Vilella fired a shot onto the Cardinal net but the shot was saved by
Sid Marquardt.
Four minutes later
Jack Bonavia took a shot to the top of the Pioneers net, but Johannassen made the save. With time ticking down, the first half ended with North Central leading Carroll 2-0.
Carroll struck early in the second half with Solenalles Vilella passing the ball to Ethan Kratzer, Kratzer fired a shot into the back of the North Central net, cutting the Cardinals lead in half.
With tough defense from both teams several minutes went by without a shot on goal. In the 63rd minute
Justin Ancelet fired a shot to the bottom left of the Pioneers net but Johannassen was able to scoop up the ball.
The Cardinals defense stayed strong, closing out the game without allowing Carroll to take another shot.
Marquardt picked up his second win this season after the Cardinals tied with North Park on Wednesday night.
Westerberg has tallied six goals on the season and also leads the Cardinals in assists (8).
North Central is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 18th when they host Millikin University at 7:30 p.m. for senior night inside Benedetti Wehrli Stadium.
