NAPERVILLE, ILL. (Dec. 10, 2023) - After a long day inside Residential Hall and Recreation Center, taking on many ranked rival institutions, the North Central College women's wrestling team won their second straight North Central College Invitational. The Cardinals had three wrestlers place first in their respective weight classes.

Top-25 institutions that made their way to the invitational included No. 1 University of Iowa, No. 11 Gannon University, No. 12 Aurora University, No. 15 University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, No. 18 Lindenwood University, and No. 18 Augsburg.

North Central claimed the top spot among all 34 teams with a total of 177 total points. University of Providence followed in second (106.5 points), next was Campbellsville University (No. 3) with 99 points, and No. 4 was Aurora with 71 points. Closing out the top five teams was Lindenwood with 67.5 points.

Maddie Avila, the No. 4 wrestler at 101-pounds, received a bye in the first round. Moving into the second round, she took on Gabriella Motz of Albion University. Avila picked up her first win of the day with a 10-0 technical fall over Motz. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Zoe Omura (Midland University) by a 7-0 decision. Avila punched her ticket to the finals by pinning Makayla Young of Indiana Institute of Technology in two minutes and 27 seconds. In the championship match, Avila took on No. 1 in the NAIA, Erin Hikiji of the University of Providence. Avila took lead of the match with a four-point takedown; however, Providence challenged the call and it was ultimately changed to a two-point takedown. Taking Avila's momentum, Hikiji won by a 13-8 decision and Avila took home second place.

In the 116-pound weight class,
Janessa George started the day off with a bye before defeating Brianna Derouin (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) with a 12-1 technical fall. Moving into the quarterfinals, she took on Rodiat Adeduntan of Iowa Central Community College by a 12-6 decision before dominating Icart Galumette (Campbellsville University) with a 10-0 technical fall. George earned second place after losing to Caitlyn Thorne of Lindenwood by a 10-0 technical fall.

No. 1-ranked wrestler in the 123-pound weight class,
Amani Jones, kicked off her day with a pin over Kivah Caballero (Providence) in 21 seconds. Taking her momentum into the second round, Jones picked up her second pin of the day in 50 seconds against Karla Topete of Carthage College. Jones defeated Isabelle Silva (Indiana Tech) by a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, she pinned Cali Leng of University of Iowa in two minutes and 35 seconds. To complete her University of Iowa sweep, Jones defeated Ava Rose with a 10-0 technical fall and took home first place.

In the 130-pound weight class,
Haley Vann began her day with a technical fall over Zoe Gaetjens of Gannon University (10-0) before taking down Mena Serna (Morton University) with another 10-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinals, Vann only needed 43 seconds to pin Paige Respicio from Providence. She also defeated Midland's Emily Paulino with a 10-0 technical fall. In the championship match, Vann dropped to No. 1 Alexis Janiak (Aurora) by a 10-0 technical fall, finishing the day in second place.

Freshman
Alondra Morales opened her day in the 136-pound weight class by pinning Abby Rhodes of Quincy University (2:19). In the second round, she defeated Addison Messerly (Campbellsville) with a 10-0 technical fall. Picking up her third win of the day, Morales beat Amor Tuttle of Wisconsin-Stevens Point by technical fall (10-0). In the semifinals, she took on teammate
Sydney Park, defeating her with a 10-0 technical fall. In her biggest match of the day Morales took on Iowa's Anayka Besco for the championship. Morales completely dominated Besco, winning first place with an 8-0 decision.

Sydney Park was also in the 136-pound weight class. Park started her day with back to back technical falls, one over Lindenwood's Hayley Gilson (12-1) and one over Quincy's Jasmine Hopkins (10-0). In the quarterfinals, Park defeated Sofia Polano (Campbellsville) with a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, Park lost to teammate
Alondra Morales by a 10-0 technical fall. In the consolation round, Park earned her fourth technical fall of the day after defeating Lindenwood's Marissa Sanabria (10-0). Park won a close match against Gabriella Perez (Campbellsville) with a 1-0 decision.

In the 143-pound weight class,
Niya Teresita Gaines kicked off her day with a pin in one minute and 12 seconds against Jasmine Gordon (Fontbonne University). She picked up her second pin of the day by taking down Leilani Martinez (Unattached) in one minute and 19 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Gaines defeated Hasting University's Tabitha Wood in a 6-6 decision. Collecting her fourth win of the day, she beat Kailey Ross of Providence with a 10-0 technical fall. In the championship match, Gaines lost a close match to Athena Willden (William Jewell College) in a 4-3 decision.

Junior
Traeh Haynes started her day off with a bye in the 191-pound weight class. She only needed 11 seconds to pin Symphanie Sampson of Schreiner University. In the quarterfinals, Haynes defeated Sydney Manos (Aurora) by a 7-4 decision before dropping to Tatum Heikka (Unattached) by pin in the semifinals. Haynes took down Jaycee Foelller in a 4-2 decision to take home third place.

No. 1-ranked wrestler in the 191-pound weight class,
Brittyn Corbishley, had a bye in the first round prior to defeating Gannon's Christina Chavez with a 10-0 technical fall. In the quarterfinals she took down Marissa Patterson (Hastings) with a 11-0 technical fall. Corbishley won against Jaycee Foeller (Unattached) in a close 8-6 decision. Wrapping up the final match of the invitational, Corbishley pinned
Tatum Heikkila (Unattached) in two minutes and 24 seconds, earning herself first place.

The North Central will take a short drive to Hoffman Estates, Ill. to compete in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championship hosted by Northwestern University on Dec. 11. Matches are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. inside NOW Arena.
