LEBANON, Ill. (Feb. 5, 2023) - Competing in their final tournament before the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC), the North Central College women's wrestling team had nine wrestlers place in their respective weight class at the Bearcat Open on Sunday.
Angelina Graff kicked off the tournament by pinning Isabella Richards of Colorado Mesa University in the first round in the 109-pound weight class. Graff would keep the streak going as she pinned her second opponent of the day, defeating Leak Pekar of Tiffin University to put herself into the semifinals. In the semifinals, Graff would fall to Ava Bayless (Unattached) via 10-0 technical fall but would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall win of her own, defeating Emily Mendez. In the third place match, Graff would square off with eighth-ranked Pauline Granados of McKendree University and would defeat her by 6-3 decision to earn third place.
Sixth-ranked Kendra Ryan kicked off her tournament with a 12-2 technical fall win over Ahisa Torres of Sacred Heart in the first round of the 109-pound weight class. Ryan put herself into the semifinals bout after defeating Emily Mendez of Adrian College by a 10-0 technical fall. Ryan picked up her third technical fall of the day in the semifinals as she defeated eighth-ranked Granados via 12-0 technical fall. In the championship bout, Ryan squared off with Bayless and surrendered a late takedown with 12 seconds to go to fall by a 5-4 decision, taking home second place.
In the 116-pound weight class, Amaya Yoshizumi received a bye in the first round before defeating Kate Borkowski (Unattached) by a 12-2 technical fall. In the quarterfinals, Yoshizumi would pick up her second technical fall of the tournament, defeating Jennifer Villagomez of Carthage to push her into the semifinals. Yoshizumi earned a spot in the championship bout after defeating Angela LoRusso of Adrian but would fall to top-ranked Payton Stroud to take home second place.
Charlene Bahnfleth received a bye in the first round of the 123-pound bracket but would fall in the quarterfinals to Amanda McAleavey of Lindenwood University. After receiving another bye, Bahnfleth would pin Anastasia Georges of Fontbonne University and defeat Isabella Richardson of Adrian to put her in the third place match against Jasmine Ward of Lindenwood. Bahnfleth would fall by a 10-0 technical fall to take home fourth place.
Emma Grimm kicked off her tournament with an 11-0 technical fall win over Mackayla Rosales of Schreiner University but would fall to top-ranked Cameron Guerin of McKendree in the quarterfinals. Grimm would bounce back by pinning Sylvia Pierce (Unattached) before defeating Elizabeth Miller of Colorado Mesa by a 10-0 technical fall. In the consolation semifinals, Grimm defeated Shainia Murray of McKendree by an 11-0 technical fall to move into the third place match. Grimm would square off against seventh-ranked Hailey Chapman of Colorado Mesa and would fall by a narrow 8-6 decision to take home fourth place.
Salome Walker started her day with a 7-6 decision win over Athena Willden of William Jewell in the first round of the 136-pound bracket. In the quarterfinals, Walker would face JoLynn Harris of McKendree and would defeat Harris via criteria to push her into the semifinals. Walker would pin fifth-ranked Holly Beaudoin of Colorado Mesa to move into the championship bout but would fall to Claire DoCugno (Unattached) by a 14-3 technical fall to take home second place.
Riley Aamold only needed one minute to pin Allydia Byard of Hiram College in the first round of the 143-pound bracket. Aamold would strike again as she pinned Rhian Kempf of William Jewell before defeating Paige Lenhardt of Tiffin by a 10-0 technical fall. Aamold would pick up her third pin of the day in the semifinals, defeating Celina Cooke of Colorado Mesa. Aamold would fall to Ella Schmit (Unattached) in the championship bout to take home second place.
London Houston won her first match in the 143-pound bracket, defeating Alana Duggan of Lindenwood by a 2-0 decision. Houston would only need 29 seconds to pick her second win as she pinned Audrey Driskell of Eureka to move into the quarterfinals. Houston would take on Erica Schroeder of Colorado Mesa in the quarterfinals bout and would defeat her via technical fall. Houston would fall in the semifinals bout to Schmit but would bounce back by pinning Selena Sifuentes Shaffer of Sacred Heart and would claim third place with a 10-0 technical fall win over Celina Cooke of Colorado Mesa.
In the 155-pound weight class, Shelby Ottum picked up her first win of the day as she defeated Kimberly Carlin of Colorado Mesa by a 13-2 decision but would fall in the quarterfinals bout as she fell to Madison Sandquist of Sacred Heart by a narrow 5-3 decision to move to the backside of the bracket. Ottum would bounce back with a pair of 10-0 technical fall wins over Elisa Cox of Adrian and Sierra Pienkowski of Carthage to move into the consolation semifinals. Ottum would punch her ticket into the third place match by pinning Erin Martin of Tiffin but would fall to Isabella Mir (Unattached) by a 10-0 technical fall to take home fourth place.
Sixth-ranked Brittyn Corbishley kicked off the tournament with a 13-0 technical fall win over Sydni Scott of William Jewell in the 191-pound weight class. In the quarterfinals match, Corbishley would only need 54 seconds to pin Yamilex Perez of Adrian before punching her ticket to the championship match with a 7-0 decision win over Jayleen Sekona of Colorado Mesa. In the championship bout, Corbishley would face top-ranked Sydnee Kimber of McKendree and would fall to Kimber, taking home second place.
The top-ranked Cardinals are idle until Sunday, Feb. 19 when they host the NCWWC Region Four Championships inside Gregory Arena at 10 am.
