DECATUR, Ill. (Feb. 6, 2023) -
The North Central College swimming teams made their second trip to Decatur this season as they wrapped up their regular schedule with a meet against Millikin University.
Setting the tone for the meet, Charlotte Kumler thrilled spectators with her competitive finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, dueling back and forth with Millikin's Shay Buchanan during the distance event and ultimately touching the wall second. The women also saw impressive runner-up finishes from Tori Robinson in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:14.67 and Scarlett Schuth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:09.64. Improving on her season best in the 500-yard freestyle from last weekend, Taylin Lemke established that she is ready to get in the mix at the upcoming College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Conference Championships by delivering a time of 6:06.94.
Near the close of the meet, Abby Anderson came away with the only women's individual event win of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke. Anderson was victorious by over two seconds against Big Blue's Natallie Buchanan and Aly Barnes with her time of 1:15.60.
The men's team achieved strong performances in the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays, posting times in these events for the first time this season. Gavin Sheehan and Ben Laurich highlighted the men's competition against Millikin with Sheehan's event win in the 100-yard butterfly and Laurich's triumph in the 100-yard freestyle. Laurich's time of 55.78 in the open 100-yard freestyle was backed up by his lead off time of 55.89 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, both marks that are his best performances in the event this season.
The women's team capped off the meet with a score of 36 points compared to Millikin's 145 points, while the men's team scored 32 points compared to Millikin's 109 points, making Big Blue the victor in both match-ups.
The Cardinal swimmers will see Millikin again at the CCIW Championships starting on Thursday, February 16th and lasting through Saturday, February 18th.
