ROSEMONT, Ill. (Mar. 10, 2023) - Getting a head start on its Spring Break trip with an indoor twin bill, the North Central College softball team began its 2023 season Thursday evening by taking on Lake Forest College in a double header at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

The Foresters claimed wins in both contests, claiming an 11-2 victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

The Cardinals were left to play catch-up after a five-run third inning by Lake Forest in the first game. North Central scored twice in the fifth as Sam Schilf led off with a walk and later scored on a double to right center by Katie Del Re. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Del Re scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Lynch. 

Lauren Bowmar was the Cardinals' starting pitcher in the second game, permitting two earned runs on four hits in four innings, while Caroline Dooley closed with two shutout innings. A leadoff double by Alyssa Sturino in the fourth inning led to North Central's lone run, as Sturino later scored on a sacrifice fly by Talia Torosian.

The Cardinals open a 10-game West Coast trip Sunday at California Lutheran University (6-5) in Thousand Oaks. Competition at Hutton Field is set to begin at noon Pacific time (2 p.m. Central).
