THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Mar. 13, 2023) - The North Central College softball team opened its West Coast swing with a victory Sunday as the Cardinals split a double header with the California Lutheran University Regals at Hutton Field.
North Central opened the day with a 2-0 victory before the hosts rallied to post a 12-4 victory in the second game.
Pitcher Caroline Dooley scattered six hits in a complete-game shutout, declining to issue a single walk and getting a pair of key flyouts with the bases loaded in what would be the Regals' best scoring opportunity in the third inning.
The Cardinals scored both runs just prior to the Cal Lutheran threat in the top of the third with a two-out rally. Alyssa Sturino drew a walk before cleanup hitter Hailey Morsovillo ripped a triple down the right field line for the game's first score. Talia Torosian followed with a single down the left-field line to bring Morsovillo home.
Sturino went 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base in the opener while Katie Del Re went 2 for 4.Â
North Central held a 4-1 advantage after its turn in the third inning of the nightcap. Sturino singled to score Del Re in the first before scoring on an error, then crossed the plate again on a single by Torosian in the third. Torosian later scored on a base hit by Kayla Crabtree.
The Regals erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the third to put the contest out of reach.Â
Torosian was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate while Sturino and Del Re each went 2 for 3.Â
The Cardinals return to competition Tuesday in Los Angeles against Occidental College. The first game at Bell Field is set to begin at noon Pacific time (2 p.m. Central).
