GEORGETOWN, TEXAS (Mar. 17, 2023) - Completing their spring break trip in Texas, the North Central College women's lacrosse team found themselves behind early and couldn't claw their way back as they fell 13-5 to Southwestern University on Friday afternoon at Varsity Field.
This is the third meeting between the Cardinals (2-3) and Pirates (8-0) in program history and the first since 2016 where the Pirates edged the Cardinals 16-15 in overtime. The Pirates now hold a 2-1 record over the Cardinals all-time.
The Pirates dominated the first half of play, scoring four goals in the first quarters and six goals in the second quarter to give the hometown team a ten goal advantage heading into the second half. The Pirates extended their lead to 11 as Hope Culberson finished off an Emily Cook pass but Lucy Culig found the back of the net with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter to get the Cardinals on the board. Abby MacKenzie found Abbey Triebe for the Cardinals second-straight goal to bring the score to 11-2 in favor of Southwestern. The Pirates kicked off the fourth quarter with a goal of their own to extend their lead back to ten but MacKenzie tallied two-straight goals followed by Triebe's second goal of the game to cut the deficit to seven with 3:20 remaining in the game. The Pirates would close out the game with a goal with 52 seconds left to give them a 13-5 win over the Cardinals.
MacKenzie and Triebe each tallied two goals while Culig added one of her own. MacKenzie dished out a team-high two assists as well. Anaise Kaufman led the Cardinals with two caused turnovers while scooping up one ground ball. Bella LaRocco fell to 2-3 on the season as she tallied ten saves in the contest.
The Cardinals return to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Wednesday, March 22 as they host Marian University at 7 pm.
