Men’s Tennis Begins CCIW Slate with Win Over Thunder

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 25, 2024) - Opening College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on Saturday, the North Central College men's tennis team used a sweep of singles play to propel them to a 7-2 victory over Wheaton College.

Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez battled Jack Booker and Cody Ching at No. 1 doubles, but the Cardinal captured an 8-7 win to claim the first points of the day for North Central. Wheaton won both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to hold a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.

Colten Way evened the contest at 2-2 with his 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 6 spot. To give the Cardinals' their first lead of the day, Daniel Estanislao cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. At No. 1 singles, Vilarroig Martinez won in straight sets before Matthew Sengphommachanh also defeated his Thunder in straight sets to clinch the win for North Central. Gonzalez Fernandez and Javier Suarez Balsera each earned hard fought wins in three sets to secure a 7-2 victory.

The Cardinals are back in action again tomorrow as they host NCAA DI Chicago State at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Illinois Wesleyan University at 2:30 p.m. in another CCIW contest.
