NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 26, 2023) - Facing two opponents on the day, the North Central College men's tennis team fell 5-2 to NCAA Division I Chicago State before sweeping Illinois Wesleyan University to earn their second conference win of the season.

Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez battled to beat Pedro Alvarez and Max Sandoval 7-6 at No. 1 doubles. The Cougars won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, granting them a 1-0 lead heading into singles play as the match was played by the Division I scoring system.

In singles play, Daniel Estanislao fought for a 7-6, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot. Colten Way earned the other point for the Cardinals with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win over Reed Gahagan.

In their second match of the day, Javier Suarez Balsera and Gonzalez Fernandez rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with Matthew Sengphommachanh/Way and Estanislao/Matt Crossland winning at their respective doubles fixtures to take a 3-0 lead to singles play.

The lone senior celebrating senior day, Suarez Balsera set the standard for the rest of his team as the entire Cardinals lineup won in straight sets in singles action to secure the 9-0 sweep of Illinois Wesleyan. This marks the 13th straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win for North Central.

The Cardinals head to Wisconsin next weekend as they take on Carroll (Saturday) and Carthage (Sunday) to continue CCIW play.
