NEW BERLIN/RACINE, Wis. (Apr. 1, 2023) - Taking on two conference opponents in one day, the North Central College men's tennis team cruised past Carroll University, 9-0 before battling it out with Carthage College to earn a 5-4 victory on Saturday.
In doubles play against the Pioneers, the duos of Daniel Estanislao/Matt Crossland and Colten Way/Matthew Sengphommachanh claimed 8-2 wins while Javier Suarez Balsera/Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez captured an 8-3 win at No. 1 to complete the doubles sweep.
Heading into singles action with a 3-0 lead, Gonzalez Fernandez rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot while Way earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 to clinch the victory for the Cardinals. Suarez Balsera, Daniel Urraca Mozos, Sengphommachanh,and Crossland all won in straight sets to secure their ninth 9-0 win of the season.
In a rematch of the CCIW Tournament Championship from a season ago, the Cardinals and Firebirds battled it out for the top spot in the conference. Estanislao and Sengphommachanh won the lone doubles match for North Central as Carthage held a slight 2-1 lead entering singles play.
Way captured a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles while Crossland earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 position. Needing two more wins to clinch the win for North Central, Gonzalez Fernandez won 7-6(1), 7-6(4) in the No. 4 spot before Suarez Balsera took care of business at No. 1 singles with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win to give the Cardinals a 5-4 win over Carthage.
North Central hosts Mikkin University on Friday afternoon for a 1 p.m. start against the Big Blue in Naperville.
