NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 31, 2023) - Facing their second straight ranked opponent, the North Central College women's tennis team fell to No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis on Friday evening inside Naperville Tennis Club. The Cardinals move to 17-3 on the season.
The Bears claimed the first two doubles matches while the No. 1 match went the distance. Natalie Bassett and Abigail Penados opened with a 3-0 lead at No. 1 doubles but WashU battled back to tie the contest at 7-7 before finishing the deal and winning 8-7 in a 7-1 tiebreaker to sweep doubles play.
No. 11 Penados fell in three sets to No. 6 Karen Gao in the No. 1 spot, 4-6, 7-5, 2-10. No. 19 Bassett squared off with No. 14 Nina Moravek at No. 2 singles. After winning the first set, 7-5, Moravek rattled off two wins to earn the victory. The Bears claimed the rest of the singles matches in straight sets.
North Central is back in action next weekend as they compete in the Midwest Invitational. The two-day event takes place at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. More information, including opponents, will be available HERE when it becomes available.
